My dog Roxie will be having pups very soon. does anyone know what the fathers reaction is to all this. I am worried he might hurt them so he spends a lot of time in his cage when Im out.

My dog is a male (neutered of course) and when my ex-roommate's dog gave birth, we wondered how things would go... we put up a babygate, and she actually brought one of the pups over to it for him to smell it. After that we took the gate down, and supervised them together... when he did something mamma didn't like, she let him know, and he backed off... but she let him sniff and lick them, and when they started to wander around, he helped to corral them for her... it was really fun to watch. He's a medium sized lab mix, and she was some small terrier mix... and he always deferred to her....

I would leave the b*tch in peace and quiet unless she needs your help. Introduce other pets slowly after she has
had time with the pups. Every animal is different, but there is a time for privacy, and this is it.

Definitely keep him separated from the mom & pups. My male boston used to be so proud of his new babies. As soon as they were born, he would mark the front & back door. (He did the same thing as soon as he knew our female was pregnant.) The female would allow him into our bedroom & he could lie on our bed so he could see the babies in the whelping box (from a distance). If he got off the bed & didn't leave the room, she'd go after him. Poor little guy would lie on the bed and look longingly at his babies for hours at a time. Every now and then, I would sneak one over to him & he would just nuzzle, snort and lick his baby affectionately. (The mom was never fooled...she knew what I was doing.) Of course, he wasn't allowed in the room unless we were with him. (As much for his protection as for the babies'.)
Once the litter was 3-4 weeks old, and moved down to the large puppy box in the livingroom, the female would allow him 'supervised visitation'. He was so happy when he was allowed to play with his babies. And, he was really good with them. However, as great as he was with the pups, he still played a little rougher with them than their mom did. I never doubted the wisdom she exhibited in keeping him at a distance while they were tiny. (My pups were 3.5 - 6.5 oz at birth.)
Regardless of how big the pups may be, they are still tiny in comparison to an adult dog's size. Your male could accidentally hurt them. It's worth keeping them separated and supervised. My male was never alone with the pups & wouldn't have been allowed to play with them if I wasn't absolutely sure he could be trusted with them.

Tomcats will kill and eat kittens and even kill young cats, I have seen it. Intact male animals can be very
aggressive toward smaller critters, even their own kind.

The Dad actually is better with small animals then the Mom. He likes to play with the little Pomeranian next door who weighs about 3 lbs. I dont let the Mom near him at all ,she grabbed it once and we werent too sure what she wanted to do with him

Please you must put the b*tch and puppies in a separate room. As well as you know your b*tches temperment there are hormones that were just introduced to her minutes after she gave birth. Even when she leaves them she must not come in contact with other dogs and it is not a good idea to have anybody handle the pups for the first few weeks, she might go for them or she might get too nervous of which her milk will turn sour and feeding pups from a bottle is a real pain and or the sour milk will kill the puppies fast.Having a litter of puppies is serious business. Make her feel comfortable in a room, she will start to make a nest to deliver whic I highly recommend a litter box in private room for her and puppies. shred newspaper as high as you can make it and she will be in heaven. Also keep her calm in labor.goodluck

Could not have been better stated.Within days or minutes of the birth hormones will kick in which may cause mom to become very terratorial and /or nervous.I would keep pets, children and even vistors at bay until you see how mom is going to react after the pups are born.Stress, especially with a 1st litter can cause behaviors unbecomming a young mother, including but not limited to aggression toward percieved threats to her babies or laying on the babies.
Please spay and neuter your pets.Dad can be done now, you'll have to wait for mom's milk to completely dry before she can be done.If you disagree now...perhaps when the puppies start toddling and pottying about you will change your mind?

Let mom have her space and take care of her pups in peace with little or no commotion. Keep dad, kids, and visitors away. This is only temporary but especially if she is a first time mom, she's going to be more nervous anyway.
Think twice on that spay neuter premise... If you have high quality animals and want the option to spay or neuter then that is up to the individual. In many cases, it is a wise choice. Don't just think that everything needs to be spayed or neutered. Show people breed wisely and on a limited basis. I spay or neuter when I feel that it is necessary but not because someone insists that I should.
I am not attacking you so please don't take it that way. I think you are a level headed young lady who has her head on straight and her heart in the right place. Just don't buy into the HSUS and PETA policies. They are doing no one any good.

Just to let everyone know, I kept the pups away from Dad the first 3 weeks then slowly introduced them and by the time they went to their new homes, Mom was completely comfortable with Dad being around the pups 24/7. It was a great experience but a lot of work taking care of those pups.
Thanks for all the advice

Aw,none taken, but w/the exeption of certain types of breeders, our opinions differ on this,Friend...too many purebreds are still being euthanized{as well as mixedbreeds from unprevented conceptions} for lack of adoptive homes, and purebred does not always mean well bred.Dogs suffer w/things like hip dysplasia, demodetic {aka:"red"}mange and dsm that a reputable breeder would have carefully limit the occurrance of.
Please don't use my name in the same sentance as you do peta's.
Goodnight for now...Sleep well!Hey,Guage,my baby gsd?He learned to hi-5 !Soo cute!
