I have a long list of "ailments" but my mental health got me on disability. I have major depression disorder, panic disorder, anxiety disorder, personality disorder. I had a total nervous breakdown about 3 years ago.
I also have diabetes type 2,high blood pressure, thyroid disease, asthma, enphysema,COPD,acid reflux disease, high cholesterol, degenerative disc disease, nerve damage in the L_4,arthritis and a cyst on the back of my left knee. I was just recently diagnosed with sleep apnea and now have a CPAP machine. I take alot of medication and have various side effect problems with some of it. The medication is necessary and the side effects are not life threatening but do cause me some problems.

Hi! All my disabilities are invisible, too. I think this makes it harder to date because I look "normal" (whatever that means) -- but as people get to know me they will slowly start to notice my cognitive disabilities. Or people who work with people for a living may notice right away -- I think because they are more "sensitive". I think most people see my disabilities as a weakness or they will try to use my disabilities against me -- not realizing that despite my disabilities I am still a very intelligent person. I try very hard to stay away from people of this "ilk". I wish I could meet someone like myself, but I think this will be hard to do. Take care. It's nice to know I'm not alone.

It is... I am a mental lol. Actually I had a nervous break down a time or two. If I get overwhelmed I have panic attacks. When they were bad I was sent to Madison and the doc there put me on dylatin which is for epilepsi. By the time they found it wasnt that I think it did some damage to my memory. Im very intelligent when my brain functions properly. Other times I tend to resemble an airhead. Either way Im an entertainer lol. We cannot dwell on what we cannot change, but we can say

I am sorry your having a hard time, if I can help please let me know, we could talk and I could give you some tools to work with.
My disabilites are: Back broken in two places
Diabetic
Fourth stage kidney disease
Surgen crippled my left leg, only about 40% use left
I was never supposed to walk again but after 4 years of very hard work I now only need my cane for stairs and long walks. Dr.s don't realy know what their doing, I guess that's why they call it "Practicing Medicine" maybe someday they will get it right. I lost my helth, everything I ever owned, my Father, My wife of 20 years and my self respect all within 18 months so I had a little bout of depression. But I refuse to let the BASTARDS!!! win. I guess that makes me either stubborn or stupid, depending on how you look at it.
I urge every one here to hang in there, when you get to the end of your rope tie a knot and hang on for dear life. If I can do it so can you and don't let anybody tell you diffrent.

2 Back operations...2 plates of steel and 7 bolts hold the back together...complete Right Hip replacement... 1 screw up the right ankle....Had bladder cancer....I beat the cancer though...but chemo thru me into R/A...then the prednizone I was taking for R/A ended up giving me A Vascular Necrosis of the foot. Now I am on Enbrel...not sure it helps all that much...waiting on another operation of the foot...take a steady diet of Heavy Pain Meds daily...but it is either that or don't get up and go anywhere. I still try and stay active...I just gave up riding horses last year...I use to raise all Tenn. Walking Horses...but they became to much work and I wasn't riding them anymore...so sold out. I do try and stay positive and think there must be some reason for all this good luck in life....I just haven't figured it out yet.

Well, I thought I had replied to this one, but I guess not. Perhaps it was a similar thread a while ago. Oh well. I'm here now.
I have epileptic (complex partial) seizures; I have psoriasis over much of my body; I have arthritis and who knows what else (latest doctor didn't even look at my X-ray he ordered and said it's probably arthritis in the joints, but I have a previous diagnosis of osteoarthritis) I have problems mainly around L3, but extending to L2 and L4 on normal days and much further on rainy days or other flaring days.) I also get a sciatic-like condition (not sure if it's sciatica) where my hips will spontaneously stop working, often in mid-step, when my back is having a bad day. I have an earlier in life diagnosis of bi-polar and I still exhibit some symptoms of that, but I mostly have that under control. My teeth are also in shatters because of earlier epilepsy meds.
Well, I think that's the majority of it. Those are the main challenges I live with on a day to day basis. I'm still in school and still going on, but sometimes it is a real struggle. I know I'll keep going one way or another.

Due to a drug know as "Thalidomide" I was born without arms. Back in the 1950's - 1960's Thalidomide was prescribed by doctors as a way to alleviate morning sickness. Thalidomide was distributed throughout the USA and Canada. It wasn't until the mid 1960's that it was pulled of the market. By then it was too late thousands of babies throught the USA and Canada had been born missing their arms, legs or both.
In my case Thalidomide caused me to be born without arms. But I am grateful because I was born with two strong healthy legs and strong toes. I am independent by use of my feet. Most everything you do with your hands I can do with my toes. In my world my legs are my arms, my feet are my hamds and my toes are my fingers.
Throughout my life I have faced many challenges, but I was taught how to use what I have and how NOT to accept/expect pity from anyone. I don't know what it's like to have arms, although sometimes I wonder what it would be like to have arms for one day. (smile) Once I dreamt that I had arms, BUT I went around all day using my feet (go figure)
I guess the key to my life has been learning to accept and love myself as I am. Unless someone points it out to me I do not look at myself as "Disabled". I feel like I am just like anyone else. My friends and family have always treated me like they'd treat anyone else and I like that.
Being disabled it does help to have a sense of humor. My sense of hunor truly kicks in when people who have known me forever forget I do not have arms and they go to hand me a package, or stand around waiting for me to open a door, or they'll say somethikng silly in reference to my hands (which I don't) My oldest sister Val used to always do that to me. Once she'd realize her mistake we'd both sit back and just laugh.
I chose a long time ago to embrace my differences instead of sitting around being mad or hateful towards the world. I realize the world doesn't owe me anything at all BUT I owe myself everything.
Being born with a disabillity I've had many positive opportunities and doors open to me. I've taken those opportunities to help enlighten the minds and hearts of people who are eager to learn about people with disabillities.
If I had a chance to live my life all over again would I want to be born with arms? NO, Why? because I would be afraid that I wouldn't be the Loving, Caring, Compassionate, Independent, Intelligent woman that I have evolved into today. Being born with a physical disabillity has truly humbled my personality in many ways and no matter how large or how small it has taught how to truly appreciate every milestone in my life. (smile)
I am proud of who I am.

Well I have a damaged nerve in my back from getting hurt on the job. I already had a issue with my left knee from a unreported fall on the job. Then with the back injury i put mor presure on the left knee so it took a total knee replacement. Then lets not leave out old Mr arthritis in both legs. Now tested for COPD waiting results.
At some time in our life we think we have it the worst into we read or see someone else who has it worst then we do. I do not feel sorry For people with disibilitys because we are people to we live as normal as one can do the same things and even like the same things as everyone else. We may just do the things differant and that makes us special we sho others that we will not be defeted by whats going on we will make it.

All my disabilities are invisible,If I dont tell people they would not know, I get mean looks from people when I use the Handicapped Parking space But Hey I am Handicapped!!
Yes I have a Disability Hanger on my Windshield.
I had Brain Tumor Surgery in 2003 and Filed for Disability that same year.
I hired an Attorney and he quit. I am a Veteran and I was lucky enough to have a Great VA case manager who followed up on my Disability and had the VA document my Disability by Testing and Doctors interviews.
I had my hearing in December of 2006 and my Disability was granted by Social Security.
I am now on SSDI and they don't expect me to ever regain my full capacity.
I was also Diagnosed with Bi Polar Disorder but the Doctor now said I am not Active in that Disorder because I have not had any Manic Episodes,I also was Diagnosed with Depression and Substance Abuse SO I am considered to be Dual Diagnosed now and I also have Chronic Pain from Arthritis and Degenerate Bone Disease. I was told it was in the early stages and I was too young to have Hip surgery for now, and they would monitor my condition.
I was an Electrical Engineer And I had my own Business for over 9 years.
I went from that to being Homeless, Divorced and Broke for 3 years.
I have been Sober now over 3 1/2 Years.
I also have found housing For Disabled Veterans and I have been living in my own Apartemnt for almost 2 years now, I was in VA housing for a year or so. I also stayed at the Salvation Army for 3 months until my VA housing came available.

My disability Is I'm hearing impaired. And have been since an explosion took it. I was 2 months old. I had Grande Mal seizures also until surgery at the age of 7 that took those away. I got some hearing from the surgery as well and learned to speak after long years of speech therapy. But I have lost what hearing I had years ago. And do lament at times. I also have problems with my equalibrium. And tend to fall from time to time. My parents had sent me to a school for the deaf and blind for years. I had learned to sign and had classes on how to fall.
People don't really seem to notice much about my hearing and most seem to think I'm drunk when I fall. But I get along in life fairly well. And find it funny that people who know I'm deaf still turn their back and walk away still talking. Their arms flailing about and heads bobbing. That used to make mad as hell, now I just laugh.

Well the Doctors told me to talk about it, I was a Cop and Navy Reserve, I was called up for a tour of duty in Afghanistan. After eight months in, I ended up getting shot in the neck and left wrist. Came back to Balboa Naval Hospital and rehabed for 6 months and then went back to work as a Cop with some pain issues and numbness. After about a year I ended up in a shooting and was hit in my right knee, which caused a spiral fracture down my Tibia, reducing the bone to gravel. The doctors wanted to amputate that night, telling me that it was just to bad to save. My now former wife, freaked out, telling me she never thought she would end up having to take care of me again. After 14 operations, I managed to keep the leg atleast for now. But I have to carry a card with me to show the guys at the airport, because I set every metal detector in the place off. My wife left during operation number 10, I was waiting outside in a wheel chair for her to pick me up when she called to let me know she wasnt coming. A few days latter I heard a car pull up outside and both my boys came running in, I then heard the car drive away. Next and last time I saw her was when we went to court, I was given full custody and the Judge chewed her a** for a good half an hour, saying everything I always wanted to say. But I am still depressed, hurt all the time and worry if Im being the best father I can be, knowing they deserve someone that can go out and do more with them. As for work, I wasnt given a choice and forced to take a medical retirement.
Well enough said,

I would like to say hello to the group and to let everyone that myself is in a wheelchair because of a flesh eating disorder I got 5 years ago from shaving my legs and got a small nick from the razor the cut never seemed infected on the outside and it wasnt but it was eating me away on the inside. 5 short days after the razor cut I found myself being rushed to surgery where the doctors had to remove my left leg in order to save my life. Im still the same person That I have always been. Im still very out going and live my life like anyone else does just have to do thinks a little differently. I just thank god everyday that he left me on this earth to show people that life can go on after you think that it cant. Anyway I just wanted to share that with you all. Peace Kris ....

Hello everyone! Funny how when you read others struggles yours seems so silly. This is hard for me because writing it down and claiming it doesn't seem good to me. I believe all things are possible and I believe in healing.
That being said I am suffering from:
Fibromyligia sp? 10yrs .
Hypothyroidism 12 yrs
Degenerating Disk Disease since 2003, had two back surgeries on lower lumbar after waking unable to walk. Disk slipped and bones collapsed on spinal cord. Two weeks later I was walking again.
Currently I have 5 disk degenerating in c spine, One very obviously bulged disk in mid back. 4 minor bulges around it that cause back spasms. I woke up a month ago with numbness in right leg and arm. Voltaran is relieving the problem by getting c spine swelling down off nerves.
Now getting Epidurals ...had first one Tuesday...next Tuesday get another one. In Mid back. I have barely any reflexes right now in left leg and in my arms. When doc had me try to walk on heels I was unable, could walk on tip toes.
I am overweight more then 100 lbs right now mainly because Thyroid has not stayed stable, and I can't lift weight anymore. I am very inactive right now compared to normal.
I have high cholesterol, allergies, and anxiety disorder that causes panic attacks....that just resurfaced recently. Also just recently struggling with depression like I did when my daughter Allison Lynn died, in my fifth month of prego, in 92.
All that being said...I am more then my disabilities and do not think that is why not dating. I am not dating because the guys that ask me out I have not been interested in. The guy I am interested in is not asking me out.
I am on family medical leave at work unpaid right now but getting by fine. My mother said I should file for SSI or disability but I can't make it a year unemployed with no income. From what I understand that is the requirement. Not to mention it would not be much to live on. So I want to get better and work tell as long as possible. I have worked at least part time since I was 14 and being home drives me stir crazy.
My oldest is Bi-polar and my youngest suffers from PTSD and that has effected my dating life more then anything because spend so much time fixing and focusing on them. Which I am not complaining because they are gift to me from God.
Faith moves mountains and it has moved me more then I could have ever thought. Perseverance is my strongest quality so I know I will get through this. Remember you are more then your disability so much more.
