What is the best movie made from a book? Maybe the one that followed a great book closely, or one that
turned out even better than the book? Give me some of your ideas. I did not care for Atonement as a movie,
for I saw it differently in my head. However, Lord of the Rings, to me, was wonderful. What do you think?
Does not have to be a current movie, or even American. I think Marguerite Duras' The Lover was well done
as a movie, too.

I have to say that The Lord of the Rings was the best I have ever seen. It followed the story closely enough that I was impressed by the director's sense of the books. No movie can ever depict a book as thoroughly as our own minds thus leaving much to be desired in someone else's interpretation. Steven King movies are by far the worst I have ever seen, but all in all I still enjoy books over movies anyday! JMO

I would have to agree that Lord of the Rings was the best.

Stephen King movies improved once they switched to the miniseries format, so much less needed to be left out. I thought they did a very good job with The Stand.

I would probably go with Lord of the Rings as well except for the fact that I've never actually read the books, lol. I want to but I just haven't gotten around to it. Gone With The Wing would probably come in second.

On a side note, I read John Grisham's The Client after I watched the movie and I must say that it was one of the few cases in which the movie was actually better than the book. Everything that was cut out for the movie needed to be cut because the book just seemed to drag on forever and there was no suspense whatsoever do to the fact that we knew what every character in the book was thinking.

I think the first Harry Potter was really close.... Lord of the Rings probably the best except they destroyed the ending..... Wasn't the shire burnt down....? It lost alot of it's symbolism but the ending doesn't ruin the fact that the movies were incredibly well done. Can't wait for the Hobbit!

I have seen a few of his movies but not Runaway Jury. A Time to Kill was my favorite. The client was the first and only book of his that I have read though and I was very disappointed with it.

'The Thorn Birds'
From the first paragraph to the last, this movie was exactly what I pictured in my head while reading the book. It is the only time I can remember that I thought a movie even came close to being as good as the book.

Interview with the Vampire. True, it does not stick to the book in some parts, but still an awesome movie.
The first LOTR movie was also good, but the rest of the sequels pretty much sucked.

My vote would have to be for Cannery Row, which combines aspects of John Steinbeck's novel of that name with his novel Sweet Thursday, starring Nick Nolte and Debra Winger in their early 1980s prime.

My favorite movie based on a book is A Room With A View, which was written by E.M. Forster. The movie was exactly like the book - very good.

I agree with poster above, Room with a View. Merchant/Ivory have been making great films for decades, The
screenwriter, Ruth P Jhabvala (pardon my spelling) is a fine writer in her own write, and has a fascinating history.
Born in Poland, family fled to England during the war, married an Indian....I will check the spelling of her name and
correct, Alice

The story was titled "The Body" it came out of one of his books of novellas, the book was titled Different Seasons and oddly the only three movies made from his stories that I actually like all came from that book.

"Shawshank Redemption" although the novelette upon which it was based by Stephen King was not named that. The title of the story had "Rita Hayworth" in it - can't remember the complete title.

"Million Dollar Baby"; also a "short" story. Interestingly, both movies had Morgan Freeman as an actor and narrator of the stories.

Brokeback Mountain. It was actually a very short novella. Beyond short. How they turned that into a movie that became a blockbuster was in who they chose for the characters. Heath Ledger did an excellent job of the angst. It was almost emotionally painful to watch

The Lord of The Rings! I know that some people get disappointed when they didn't see the scorch of the Shire but that would have been a secondary climax after the BIG climax of the Ring being destroyed.

To people who have not read the book probably may not have excepted it. Personally, I loved both endings.

My vote goes for A Time to Kill by John Grisham. Some minor differences but the movie was able to carry itself. Both evoke major emotion and that is one thing that seems like book-to-movies struggle with.
