I would tell them the truth and leave the meeting up to them. First meeting, I would be meeting either to see if there were any connection at all. I don't think you know that till you meet.

That's why you need to decide before you join a dating service how far you're willing to travel to meet someone and never commit to meeting someone if their out of your range.
Be honest up front if the person is out of your travel range. Anyone who gets upset because you're not willing to go half way around the country to meet them just to see if your compatable is probably not worth the trip in the first place.
If you have multiple people you want to meet and they all live within your distance range, I say meet them all and see what happens. Just let them all know that you are meeting other people and not just them. Saves a lot of headaches for everyone just to be honest.

I agree with everyone be upfront. Like Joel said you may miss even a friend and even you should meet. But hint from someone who has met someone online. If/when you do meet both agree whatever happens happens. That way there is no expectations JMO

Depends on what kind of "meeting" you are talking about. If you are in any way serious with the first person, you should be upfront about it. Otherwise, when just dating, aren't you supposed to expect the other person to be seeing as many people as they want if you haven't mutually decided to be exclusive?

maybe im alone on this, but nothing feels worse than to talk to someone and get your hopes up and then get blown off because they met someone else in the meantime.
and no i don't assume that everyone else i seeing as many people as possible.
