I kinda like the Chinese finger puzzle. It took me half the day to get the first one off. I got really frustrated and no one would tell me the secret.

We had great toys as kids, but the kids today probably would not be allowed to play with them, because they would be concerned dangerous. They would be swallowing the jacks, wrapping the slinky around someones neck, hitting each other with the lincoln logs. Funny I do not remember don't that stuff, we just played with them and had a wonderful time. Oh the simple life.

judi35 - I still have my jacks and ball and there still in an old metal band-aid can where I always kept them.

Everytime I see a thread like this I get choked up - it stirs up old and happy memories . Many toys have already been covered and if I am not mistaken The Slinky is still around and just the other day I saw Tinker Toys in the same old cardboard drum they always came in. I believe it was in a BJ's Warehouse or Cosco. I would like to see both Lincoln Logs and Erector Sets come back. Both were fun and educational at the same time.

Oletafive mentioned the Chinese finger puzzle. I got one in my stocking one year and had a great time with it. A lot of mileage for such an inexpensive toy.

Remember the little red square that had numbers 1-9 and you had to slide the numbers around to get in sequence? I spent hours with that thing!

I agree with all of the above and the cute part of it is that the toy manufacturers are already ahead of us. This year must be retro. They have the slinky, the sock monkey, hula hoop has been around a few years, I don't think it will die. We are from a great generation, plus we made our own entertainment, Kick the Can, Annie Over (?) where we threw a ball over the house, and the old stand bye, Hide and Seek. The part I miss most of all and it will never come back is our mothers calling us in for supper!

Kick the Can! I am guessing it was limited to the Midwest and possibly unique to Illinois. I never heard it mentioned anywhere else but again I could be wrong. I loved that game. As a prank I filled the can (a motor oil can) full of rocks. This kid kicked the can and let out with a loud ouch. Fortunately his sneaker absorbed most of the blow and he was not hurt. As kids we think we are indestructable but if my parents would have found out about my little prank I would have been in trouble. Anyway, this game in the Chicago area was limited to the warmer months. In the Winter it was indoor hide and seek or playing with the Christmas toys. Has anyone mentioned the Jack-in-the-Box?

King Zor! My son had a toy called King Zor, when he was around 8 or 9. It was a dinosaur, and had a gun that shot a dart or something. When the dinosaur got shot, it would shoot back little pellets. It ran on batteries and when it came to a wall or object while walking, it would turn around and walk back. It was so much fun! But, it would never make a comeback, because it would be considered dangerous because of the little pellets. Anyone else remember that one?

I had a jack in the box and somehow got my index finger stuck in it. Mom told me we would have to go to the firestation to get it cut off. I screamed bloody murder all the way to the station.. I was relieved to find out they were gonna cut the box off my finger.. NOT my finger off the box!

Of course, the most enjoyable toy was a vivid imagination. We could pretend, and turn a simple field into an ocean, or a mountain, or a raging river. We could have super powers, or we could kill a tiger using the gun that we made out of our little hands. Sticks made wonderful swords, or rifles, or even magic wands.

I also liked rolls of caps. You could smash a roll with a big rock and make a loud bang.

Fire crackers were also a lot of fun. Magnifying glass's were great for starting little fires. (I was always able to put them out as well) Magnets were always fun to play with.

Every boy wanted a BB gun, my brother had one, but he shot a neighbor. For some reason I never got one.

Always loved Dominoes. As children we had two double sets mixed. The game would go on allnight. It sure made you think and learn how to count fast.
