I was just thinking.... there used to be a lady in Crossville, Tennessee, that would give weather forecasts by looking at nature. Everything from fogs to insects. Helen passed away...and I haven't heard the "old timers" forecasts in a long long time.
The old farmer that used to live down the road used to have "old sayings" as well... and to tell the truth, they hit it better than the College educated televised forecasters did.
I remember one was: If you see a lot of spiders building webs near/in your home late summer and into the fall, means it will be a bad winter. I have seen MORE SPIDERS this year than I can remember in a long time. AND I HATE SPIDERS!!! Terrified of them!!!
Miss Helen used to say to count the heavy fogs in August. Ever how many DENSE fogs you have in August represent a measurable snow that winter. So if there is 5 dense fogs in August... you will have 5 measureable snows that winter! The "minor fogs" would mean minor snowfalls, etc.
Theres one about the stripes on caterpillars, but I can't remember the forecast!

My dad always told us (I was born and raised on a farm) if the caterpillars had thick fur it was gonna be a cold snowy winter. Also said if the corn shucks were thick that was a sign for bad winter weather. And also, you can look at the outdoor animals fur in late fall/early winter to see how thick it is..really thick coat means a really cold winter

when my dog lies by the wall and pants, it is sure sign of a hot day. when she scratches at the door and hides in her bed, look out another cold night.

If you look at the moon and it has a ring around it, count the stars inside, that will be the number of days before it rains. No stars, rain before noon. Ring around the moon, rain before noon!
It there a lot of acorns, it'll be a bad & long winter.
If my older male dog gets right by me --it's going to be a thunderstorm. He's right!
If you kill a snake, you hang it over the fence and it'll rain within 3 nights.
My mom learned things from her granny, I laugh, but she's right usually.
Becky, I think the c'pillar is how many days of real bad weather. I've also heard you divide it by 2??? and it's the tornado storms.
The more ant beds there are, the less food there will be. ( before NAFTA)
