I am very interested in going to school to work on cars. I like to do work under the hood and to do after market work. Since I was little I have been around cars. Its what makes me happy. I am trying to find a good school to attend to get my degree. Can someone give me some good school I could attend.

I am very interested in going to school to work on cars. I like to do work under the hood and to do after market work. Since I was little I have been around cars. Its what makes me happy. Can someone give me some good school I could attend. there is a young lady on here that posted up in the 'electric'power steering post, I think she would be the best to ask your question to because she has obviously been where you would like to go and can give you a ladies view on the subject, in fact ,if I lived closer to her .I'd probab;y have to adopt her ,

i went to uti its a great school and you will learn everything there is to know about cars you will love it give it a try there isnt any other school better

honestly the best thing to do is start working on them places train u at a job. i work at firestone, moved and transfered here from maryland! their sending me to school next year. other then that whats their to do in iowa im in marion and no noting lol

no thats not the best thing to do uti is the best way to go keep your gpa up and you attendance and a major company will pick you up like bmw audi and other major companys and they will pay for everything you wont have to come out your pocket for school and you get a free year you would just have to work in the trade for 1 year to get your ase

sounds pretty good I was going to go there, but things didn't work out back when.
But when i was looking into it, they have engine repair for all sorts of vehicals, also they have autobody detail,painting and body crafting.
Also if you go there they will help you get a job while going to collage but i think that is after a month, but check it out, and see what you think.
Just an extra one to look into.

I wouldn't got to a school like ITT or UTI. Look into a community college. It will be a lot cheaper. Working for BMW is not top of the map or anything. You will get paid about the same as the rest of the dealerships. If your serious you need to major in business and minor in automotive tech. Then you become a shop manager and get paid a lot better. If your just interested in cars. Pick up a haynes manual and get some books. I know a lot about Honda b/c I have been building them for a while now. I have been into them since 98-99.
To the guy with high compression boosted application (integra). What compression are you running and what turbo? what trim? What motor?

anohter good school is wyotech. you can get a degree in nine months and they have progams for just about anything automotive related. they have job placement as well.

I went to WyoTech. Nine months and $37,000 later, and they haven't helped me at all. WyoTech is worthless. You are better off being a shop b*tch for a year then paying to go to that school.
I spent more time be questioned about my stubble and if my shirt was tucked in then being taught. And once the instructors were informed of my after hour activities, I was bombarded with ridicule when I should have been taught.
Do not go to one of these schools, get a job in a shop, you'll be a lot better off.

I call bullshit. The highest compression you can get from those motors is 10:1, unless you have a custom block built. Eclipse's come in many different generations, the 1st gen weighs less than any Honda, well except the lawn mowers.
Don't start bragging about a rice burner like you just got done racing Paul Walker, I'll make you feel so dumb you'll want to kill yourself.

haha this shit is too funny i went to wyotech in west sacrameto and am no working at a fab shop that got hired at while at school and yea thestaff sucks at finding u a job so wow u have to work for it but i have talk to a lot of people andif u want adeal jo got to ti if u wanna do anything els go to wyotech haha a fast honda thats funny
na justkidding dude i have mad respec for wha u guys can do with a 4 banger
i just got into the v8 suff but now have a evo8 too and my gt500

I kinda agree . A community college may be the better route. Specialize in something. My son is doing diesel mechanics,and is working at a John Deere dealer already. So far, so good.

I would suggest visiting the schools and see how one differs from the other....If it was me,, I would do what I did years ago and find a shop willing to teach you the right way to diagnose and repair a car... Even though the way that technology has advanced on vehicles in recent years you might be better off going to school and learning about the new and up-to-date technology that is coming out or will be out... Also I saw on nascar.com about some foundation that offers 3 scholarships to a mechanic school and all you do is prove to the foundation that your worthy of being sent to school under a scholarship from them...Its worth a try to as school is not cheap ....

when i had my turbo S10 with 377 de stroked small block(4.155 bore with 3.5" crank) i was running low compression about 8.5:1, and whenever you do forced induction lower compression was better i thought*scratches head* lol... i don't know of many people running 14 or 15 pounds of boost with more then 10:1 compression.... And those that i did know only lasted a few thousand miles if they were lucky.

I would suggest you not even bother with working on cars. If you want to actually make a living at it. If you want to do it as a hobby or for recreation, that is fine. But to have to rely on it to put a roof over your head, food on your table, and clothes on your back, FORGET IT.
Reason being, a thing called flat rate. Which we in the business commonly refer it as to Flat Rape.
Flat rate is the time allotted to fixing a car. And most time studys today are not accurate or attainable. So say the labor book states that it takes 2 hours to do a particular repair, and you take 3.5 to do it, you just worked 1.5 hours for FREE.
How do you like working on cars now?
Along with miss diagnosis, wrong parts, trying to get parts, cheap bad parts, breaking something upon making a repair, who do you think will take the hit on that end of it?
Guess what. YOU will. Trust me. I have been there. Done that. Got the tee-shirt and lost wages to prove it.
None of the school instructors tell their students this is what awaits them. They keep bragging that you can and will beat the labor times. B.S. Ask them this: If that was and is the case, then WHY are they not still under hoods wrenching on cars, instead of in a classroom teaching? Hmmm......
I got out after 22 years. And am much happier now. I get paid from punch in to punch out time, i get overtime, (which is unheard of in a dealership), i have weekends and nights off, and time to enjoy what is left of my life.

i agree with catchynickname. i started out at a honda dealer as a porter. worked my way up to a tech position. the dealer gave me all the factory training i needed. you could go to your community collage to learn the basic fundamentals. ase certifications are the most important thing to get. any good repair shop will want you to have them.
and yes flat rate pay absolutley sucks. be prepared to have your a** handed to you from time to time. it is really a tough way to make a living. especially when most of the work you will be doing is warranty work.
karrpilot is right on, spoken like a true seasoned dealership tech.
