I love to sew. I mostly make clothes, but I made a quilt a few years back and would love to make one again. I tend to free-style things... I'll reference a pattern, but then fly with it and adapt it. I also sew cosplay outfits... if you're unfamiliar with what that is, it's basically costumes of characters from Japanese anime that people wear to anime conventions. They're the most fun to sew because some of those outfits are just plain impossible by all laws of physics, and you really have to bust your brain to figure out how to make them work when you're creating one. I have one such outfit in my profile pictures if you're interested. I made the entire thing two days before the convention.

Alteration in my part of the world consists of someone bringing me an article of clothing, telling me where it doesn't fit, and then me hunched over Daisy, my beloved sewing machine!
If we have more sewers here, maybe we could start a group project - a mail-around quilt, everyone does a section - then donate it.

I do sew from patterns, but I am a beginner and not mechanical. I find it very difficult. I love to sit at the
pattern books and pick out fabric, love to cut out, but putting it together and sewing is a task that
takes me forever and leaves me in tears. I would love to be able to make nifty things like bags and
coats, but simple pull on skirts and pants is as far as I have managed, and those with great frustration.
I wish there were more sewing classes around....

Hand sewing is fun in and of itself. I do make toys and small gift by hand. Found an old sewing book from
early 1940's, and that is how sewing was once taught. First, you learned to sew by hand (with thimble!)
and only after some understanding of the construction did one move to the machine. I met a woman
from Viet Nam in college who hand sewed her clothing. She also cut out fabric for clothes without a pattern,
just by sight. Now, there's a gift!

I make quilts(mainly during winter). This summer I have been working on tops and shorts and Pj's for my granddaughter . She's 2 1/2. Very simple patterns, but I change them some. I've been sewing since I was about 8. My first quilt (baby) was hand made on a camping trip when I was expecting my first son. Still love sewing and always will.

I love to sew. Learned how by handstitching quilt blocks w/g'mother.
I always had the coolest Barbie doll outfits in the neighborhood.
And if I'd get
off my butt, would be able to say the same thing for my own clothes!
I've lived in jeans & Tshirts for so long, don't know how to wear anything
else.
I also make costumes - Renaissance, Civil War, Halloween, dance/ballet.
I use patterns as a reference, then cut them to suit my needs, add my
own details, etc. I'm short waisted, so patterns never fit me right.

I want to sew, but it is sure hard for me. I don't "see" how things go together, and have to use only the easiest patterns. I get teased for my elastic waist pants, but that's the extent of it. I would love to make a lined jacket
or a pretty dress, but fear I would waste my money, make a mess of it, and wind up in tears. How can I improve?
There are no classes near me.

first off, get a great pattern, and use some old material the first go round, baste it by hand, takes a while, but once you get your fit right, and you'll have gotten it together by then, you should be ready to try it on the good material, just take your time, pin it before you sew it, just to make sure, i've sewn all my life, i can do it, but it's hard for me to explain it, hope this helps alittle, holler back if you have any questions, and good luck!

I generally keep a medium-level sort of needle on my machine, however if you're sewing something thicker and heavier like canvas you'll want to use a heavy-duty needle to avoid breaking it. With fine fabrics, like some of your silks, you'll want to make sure you use the light-weight needle since a normal one will cause pulls in the fabric. It's usually a good idea to try out a test swatch - I've honestly only had to change needles on my machine less than half a dozen times, and I've been sewing since I was nine.

I used to sew a lot - learned to sew from my Mom and Grandmother - started by making doll clothes, then in home-ec class I made three dresses while everyone else made one. Used to make most of my clothes, clothes for my kids when they were small - made my daughter's wedding gown. Have made draperies, slipcovers, tailored jackets, etc. I sometimes sew from patterns, but have several books on pattern drafting and like to make my own patterns as I am hard to fit. I enjoy most everything to do with working with fabric and needlework. Love to crochet, knit, and do counted cross stitch. Would love to make a quilt one day! Lately I have not sewn as much as I play the clarinet in three community bands, a swing band, and my church band which takes up most of my time.

Sewing is what I have been doing since I was 15. Ihave been sewing for a living for about 30 years.I work for Interior Designers, what ever they design I make from a picture and measurements. You would not beleive some of the outragous window and bed treaments. I also do slipcovers and upholstery. Anything out of fabric, all draperies are done by hand trim and all. Most of our trim is hand made in Italy. Love my job! Just wanted to tell you a little about me.

I used to make my boys jeans and suits. Make quilts now and alter and repair now.
Sometimes it is easier to learn if you have something you really like that fits well and is get worn. Rip it up at the seams and cut a pattern form it. That way it will fit and you can kind of see how it will go back together. Good luck

I gathered my courage and made a purse from a Vogue pattern 1976. My mom used to make me dozens
and I inherited the pattern on her death. I used leopard fleece (a good quality one) for the outside and
a paisley lining from my 1967 jumpsuit. A bit crooked in parts and used the wrong color thread, but
now I see how to do it, and plan to cut apart a bunch of old skirts to make more for gifts.

When you pick our your fabric, also purchase thread the same color as the fabric.
Fleece is a super easy material to work with.
When I purchas a pattern, I set it aside. Then when I have time I open up the envelope
and sit down with a cup of coffee and read the pattern.
I might cut the pattern pieces out 3 days from the initial reading.
There are many easy sew patterns available.
If you cut your pattern pieces first I find it is easier.
Each pattern piece has a number on it. You can take a marker
and mark the wrong side of the material, don't worry no one will see it.
Then when it comes time to put the pieces together to sew it's each to
find them.
I'd recommend sewing something you enjoy and think would be fun
to make.
Perhaps a few throw pillows, etc.
When ever you make a mistake, just take a breath. Think of the overall
project as a puzzle. Most of all enjoy it.

I went to store today and bought fabric for two more bags. Also making a stuffed toy from an old library book, took
the book to Kinko's and they enlarged the pattern. I am working on the face now, embroidering the face. I am
confident on hand sewing and on making cute, expressive faces on toys. But am nervous about sewing the cat
together, the book did not give the seams, so I guess will go with 1/4 inch, which my old machine does not have,
have to just guess. I love my Polish (no kidding) machine, it is all simple moving parts, would not know what to
do with the fancy new style ones.

All of you have made my day...I live to sew. I learned how when I was six and my Oma would let me sew on her treadle sewing machine..I still use it for sewing heavy fabrics and leather.I used to sew all the clothing for my children and myself.a couple of years ago I started making patch quilts for our American Truckers.their bedding needs improvement.so many don't have blankets that can keep them warm in the cold weather. In alot of states they are not allowed to keep their trucks idling and without the trucks idling there is no way for them to stay warm.and so I made recycled quilts for them. All the fabric I got at my recycling center: flannel, cotton and denim.most of the quilts had blankets used as batting and bedspreads as the backing.Sold them for $15.00 and they are full size quilts. This is another idea you might pass around. So many more truckers need quilts..
Today all my time is spent on making Barbie doll prom gowns and cotton dresses.I love sewing these together.I have four main patterns and just use my imagination and make new ones as I go.I can look at a picture of a prom gown and in a matter of minutes have it made for Barbie.Took fashion design in college and that is helping now.I have sold most of my dresses on the international net but hope to soon set up a shop here in the states and let it take off.Sewing is a joy that comes from within.you don't have to be perfect at it, but it must make you happy..
I tell all the little girls that I teach, take your time, don't get mad, there is always a good seam ripper, and never give up.you can walk away and come back later and all will fit together.Sewing isn't mastered in a day.and yes the patterns are hard to understand even for me.but don't give up.Sewing is a talent that someday might not be here but for us that stand by our machines and sew on and on and on.just watch out for that one finger that gets sewed on when I am not paying attention...LOL

when sewing from patterns the standard seam allowance is 5/8. Which usually lines up to the grove on your sewing machine feed plate. I found craft projects tend to use 3/8 for seam allowances. This should also be marked on the feed plate. 3/8 is close to the 1/4 you thought. Also you might want to pick up tailor chaulk. I love making marks on pieces, such as front/back, top/bottom etc. The chaulk wipes off. I am now experimenting with washable markers. I found they are great for making alterations when cutting out a pattern.
I reccomend you getting "practice" material before going into the final item.
I change my needles all the time. Makes a big difference.

Just wanted to say hello and that I too love to sew and wish I could help you. I hate to hear of you struggling but it will get easier. Sounds like you are on your way already anyway. Maybe a neighbor that you don't even know could help you if you ask around. Maybe an ad at the grocery store bulletin board or something for some one to teach you. Wishing you success and fun along the way. ( you can order a 1/4 inch foot for your machine.)
Someone suggested to make a square for a quilt and exchange. We could do that here on this site. Who is interested????

Rosie,
Do you need cotton fabric for these quilts? I was recently "gifted" lots of great cotton fabric that needs a home. If postage isn't to pricey I can send it your way. Better yet if someone is going your way, maybe it can hitch a ride. If someone is local in my area, It needs a home. I will post it on Craigslist if nobody here is in need.
Thanks

I am learning how to use my digital camera. Off hand I think there is purple, green and yellow. Its sitting in piles in my garage. Go figure, The car sits outside and the fabric is inside. I've been sewing sence my ma taught me when I was growing up. She taught all 7 of us kids to sew, said she would not raise any helpless kids. I sew for myself mostly, but have taken up sewing lingerie after being ask to a few months ago. I make some pretty nice, and sexy, lingerie. I started a black leather skirt & vest set but the lady I was making it for managed to get herself arrested and it looks like she isn't going to be wearing personal clothing for a while. I've got the skirt almost completed and the vest is cut out and about ready to stitch together, is there any petite (size small) Ladies out there intrested in a very sexy black polished leather hip-hugger mini skirt with matching vest? I am still at a stage where some size altering is possible.

I sew from patterns, I have since I was 8, so that is 40 years of it. I also do quilting, and crocheting, which I learned from my grandma, who came over from Czech , 3 weeks after the Titanic sank. I did all these things, so when I had my home, I would have all things in it that I made, which I do, and I love the comfort and softness they provide. I also were doing these things while being in 4-H for 10 yrs, and my classmates were in sports and partying, and I was sewing, crocheting, cooking and baking. They are now regretting not learning them, because times are getting tougher and I know how to budget and make creative items, and the joy it gives me. It is so nice to have this group to chat with, and wonderful to share ideas and tips with. Happy Stitches!

Hey everyone, I've been wanting to learn how to sew for some years now. My great-godmother taught me a little when I was around 5 yrs old, and its something I've alway wanted to get back started on. I recently started designing clothes again, after 5 years, and I could really use some help on how I can get started. I'm a fast learner and was just thinking about getting a sewing machine that comes with instructions and just sort of teach myself, but im not sure if that'll be the best way. I 'm open to all suggestions and tips, so let me know what you think, thanx in advance.

As a fellow beginner, I only suggest you take a couple lessons from either a good sewer in your neighborhood, or
at the place where you buy a machine, and I suggest you look at and think about the kind of sewing you want to do
before buying. For example, I know I do NOT want machine embroidery, computerized, all that. But, I do want
to sew tiny toys, so I need one that sews tiny things well and easily.
The other suggestion is to never get frustrated by buying a complex pattern. Start with something easy, and work
up gradually. Also, there are some GREAT new books out. Try Seams To Me or Sew Darn Cute, I checked them
out of the library and made copies of what I like. Keep us posted on your sewing!
PS I also like hand sewing, and you might enjoy that, too.

Alice Kathleen, I believe you have answered your own first Q and used good judgment in your
self lessons in sewing. Patterns, fabrics and accessories have become so expensive that dressmaking has almost become a lost art. I began my sewing at age 7 and have only in the last 5 years since becoming a widow, almost closed up the sewing room. I made all wearing apparel, weddings, choir robes, and my husbands dress suits (western). I retired as a secretary and assistant to the county home economics agent in Tallahassee, Fla. I taught
sewing, I taught alterations and handled 14 annual fashion shows. I taught the use of standard sewing machines and the use of sergers. I am now assisting my grandaughter by phone and e-mail while she's in college. Several tips for you and others, choose a simply pattern, very simple. Read the entire pattern instruction sheets and any
details you do not completely understand, ask help from 1)a friend, 2) your local county
Extension Service (usually in your county Agricultural Office) This is an arm of your State University and has many great services in assisting; and 3) invest in a Simplicity or McCall book of construction with diagrams and details of all steps in construction. Best wishes and much joy in your creations. flagirl16 friends call me cyndi

some thrift stores will let you fill a bag for a very low price. if there are any like that where you live, buy a bag of clothes. it doesn't matter what size they are. carefully take each one apart at the seams. lay each piece flat. notice the curve for the top of the arms, the tapering down toward the wrist, the arc where the arm hole would be. notice the pants. think of it as a puzzle. then put them back together. if you do this a few times you will no longer even need a pattern. i started designing my own clothes because i was always changing the pattern. just remember when you measure yourself, always add an inch for seam allowance.
the bad thing about sewing classes is that everyone has to make the same thing.

I love to sew, I started in the 90's my daughter was just a toddler at the time. We couldn't afford all the princess clothes I wanted to dress her in, so I begged my ex for a machine. It took me a few years to get it, he felt I would never use it lol. Well I burned it up in two years I used it so much. When I started I had never touched a machine before, and chose one of the hardest patterns to use at the time. My goodness the seam ripper became my best friend lol! Anyway I just love to sew, just last weekend I finished my daughters homecoming dress. She was soooo excited to have me make it, shes 15 and I thought for sure when I suggested it she would turn her nose up at the idea but she didn't. We went and picked the fabric and pattern together, and made this dress together. It was a blast to say the least. Im so happy to find this group, I didn't realize so many people still sewed today!

My first memory of hand sewing was while sitting at my Mother's feet as she was sewing on the machine. I began by making clothing for my dolls. Of course, I graduated to making clothing for my children, then wedding gowns for the brides in the city I lived in. I now make clothing for my 7 grandchildren and of course, for myself. I have saved every pattern ever purchased so I have quite a collection! I still have my Mother's old Singer in addition to my own, plus a Brother Machine for embroidery which I just love! I'm never at a loss for something to do....I just purchased more fabric for another quilt for a family member and can't wait to get started on it! Happy sewing to all!!

I sew professionally...work for a bridal shop right now. I am purging my sewing room right now, trying to downsize...so difficult...hard to get rid of things that you think you may need later on. I still sew from patterns..if I have the time, but do know how to draft my own.

I started sewing at a very young age and was using a sewing machine at age 6 or 7 making barbie doll clothes. When I was pregnant with my first son I made most of the baby clothes. Had time on my hands then now just have time in the back of my mnd but still sew. I am looking to start sewing some scrubs for work. Hopefully time will become available again and need to get the machine adjusted so the thread quits bunching up underneath when you back-stitch. Will also do some machine piecing for quilts. I have taught both of my sons how to use the machine also. They putz but nothing major for now.

I also have been sewing everything. Doll clothes when I was little, my school clothes in high school and college, then clothes for my husband and 3 sons. When I went to work in Washington DC I made my own suits and blouses. I also made curtains, slipcovers, sheets. pillowscases and pillows. I am retired and have materials for at least 40 more years of sewing projects. Unfortunately, my eysisght has become so bad that I can no longer thread a needle.

I do automotive upholstery, I have to rip it up and lay out the old to make my paterns....does that count? I use a consew 211 walkin foot machine. It can sew up to 7 layers of vinyl flawlessly...

Hey hey hey... Prolly the first and last guy you'll see in here for a while to come. But I sew on a 1916 Singer model 33 redeye treadle. Now there's an art. (There is no artistry when the computer does all the work...)
Motorcycle saddles, boat sails, clothing repairs, display cloths, and protective mats..
I also have a 1940 singer model 16 electric badly in need of ashuttle housing... if any of Ya'll have an old broken model 16, I could use the parts. Reach me at skarffermw at yahoo dot com
Thx, Mike

I find great pleasure in sewing, both by hand and machine. I still sew from patterns, but I mostly do alterations.

Looks like I may be taking up sewing in a few months. The only time I ever touched a machine, was in Jr. high---and I wasn't good at it then.
I'm curious; Has anyone ever sewed there fingers into the machine? Cause if it can be done, I'll be the one to do it.

Hello everyone. I was searching online for sewers in Sacramento and who would have thought I would end up on a dating site... It just so happens I am single too! lol so I joined. But here is why I am happy to chat with all of you. I would love to meet one of you that might be interested in sewing my designs. I would like to create my designs for the Big Beautiful Woman. I am looking for a partner that has the sewing talent. I will provide the materials etc. Please do ask me quetions. This is a dream I am finally going to move forward on. I love reading your post. I can see the passion in your discussions. That is exciting. I wish to change from selling other peoples designs to selling my own with a qualified partner. This would be something you could do part time and I would be your ever ready learning assistant in the sewing that is. Coming from a Hispanic curvy family. There needs to be better options out there for us shapely gals.
