I will be turning 62 next month, so yesterday, I went down to the SSI office to see what my oppions are..
First off, had to wait in line while they took care of some mex. and other non-americans, started me thinking, but that is a different thread..
Ok, I get up to the window, and the lady is taking my information, she states, that if I want to continue to work,, they will deduct $1.00 for every $2.00 that I earn,, but if I want to collect my SSI, which I worked for all my life, at 62,, they will give me $750.00 some odd dollars, to live on.. But I can earn up too $18,000, and collect this $750.00 for 3 months out of the year..
Question.. How is a person to live on this, when you live alone ?

I know what you are talking about Mikey. I went from being qualified for 1700 a month to 989 because I was disabled and had to take mine as SS disability. Now the IRS says I owe taxes for 2000 and they take $100 a month of that. With interest and penalties, I will not pay off that original $3000 for the rest of my life.

This really scares me...I just turned 56, I have no type of a pension where I work, not much money saved. I figure I will have to work the rest of my life there is no way I could ever live on social security and by the turn I am old enough to retire there may not be social security. I just pray that I stay healthy so I can continue working.

dee dee,
Just use your mind and until you get old enough to draw what you can, figure out how you can supplement your income to fit your lifestyle. Care about yourself first and do what you can without letting anyone else know what you are doing to supplement your lifestyle. It will take some adjustment but keep a positive attitude.
SS will always be here or some form of it. Society will always take care so no one will starve.

Mikey, something don't sound right here. I have been told that I can draw disability SS, I am 54, and was injured in a motorcycle accident. I was told I could recieve $750 a month and after 2 yrs I could return to the work force remain getting the $750 a month, and be allowed to make up to $15,000 a year before I would be penalized. I chose to heal up and just return to work. I just don't understand why it is so different for each one of us. Good Luck Man, and Just Hang in there

They never told me that. But you may have had better jobs than I have had. I am disabled and believe me I would go back to work if I could. But I only get 830 a month. I have to pay medicade 90 a month to cover medical bills that medicare doesn't cover. I only get 10 a month for food stamps. They told me I could get a part time job but I couldn't make over 600 a month. That is not very many hours. I don't know what I could do for that little of money and not hurt my health. ( I have a lot of things wrong)
Everymonth I worry about how I am going to stretch it and if I will be homeless soon. I don't blow money. The internet is my only spluge. I would go bonkers with out getting on here to talk to people. Oh and I forgot they also take out for my Part D to pay for my RX. This life sucks.

Mike, I lived on 650.00 a month for quite awhile. It isn't easy, you don't eat very often. Now, I live off of between-900.00 and 1000.00. It still isn't easy, and you still don't eat very often. You get used to it. Painfully, but you do. That's with working, and not old enough for SSI yet, not by far. See Mike, your not alone. We have to face it the government stinks!! Especially if you are a born American.

I may be mistaken, but if you wait til 65, the money benefit may be somewhat more. Am convinced the System wants us on life suppt. before the money accesses! And we pay mightily for this Soc.Sec. while we work. It's the sketchy medical benifits that scare me. Finess.

Sorry to hear you will be in such a place. Do think many of us are. The phrase a day late and a dollar short has taken on a whole new meaning in my life since retirement. Good luck

mick youve been given wrong info; If your on SSI any money you report as earned is deducted from your monthly 750. SSI or supplemental security income is NOT the same as your regular social security check your eligeable for at 62, with that you can earn up to 18000 a year and keep all your reg social sec retirement ck
