The more I research North Dakota, the more it sounds like a nice state. Pretty low population, not overcrowded, mostly white people, slower pace of life, big enough largest city to have everything you need, low house prices and cost of living, etc.

I moved up to Fargo from Virginia three months ago. I really enjoy it here. It's cold. But it's still pretty nice. I'm loving the snow. Compared to VA, almost everything is cheaper (the only thing that is obviously more expensive than VA is toilet paper). So, I would say, yes, come up here. Just make sure you don't drive some crappy car that won't do well in snow (trucks are good, Civics are crap).

Western North Dakota is booming now and not a good place to find anything besides work---North Dakota is like any place else--some people love it because they would do well anywhere-others hate it because they would hate anywhere----I grew up in north central ND--moved because there were not many opportunities to do things as well as jobs---Moved to Fargo because there are many places to go dancing, many job opportunities as well as housing is reasonable--------why would anyone stay where they are not happy unless they are not happy anywhere they are-lol

The people here are great, but obviously we have our naysayers like any other place.

*chinrub!* Nice? Yes, it is, and it isn't. Depends. I'm not a naysayer but I do have to make some points. Yes, our economy is strong, the housing sucks, the people friendly, well, most, and it snows here. I've lived here ever since, but I can't stand the way these so called 'politicians' are handling the state. We need brisk action, a sound medical plan, more housing, and decent affordable everything. I'm more of a pessimist but I'm trying to be an optimist. Not as easy as it sounds! Actually, come to think of it, nothing ever is. SO, welcome to North Dakota! If you don't have a choice, well, we're boned either way. Hate it here, hate it back home....etc. Welcome to Hell's Lobby! Cue the lobby music.

The cold weather keeps the riff raff out...at least 6 months of the year. If you like open spaces and hate crowds this is your place. Many non-residents think of ND as a hunters paradise. I think it's pretty great. In addition to our own attractions Canada and MN lakes are a 1/2 days drive or less away and the mountains are abouta a days drive. The eastern 1/2 of the state housing is not an issue in the west 1/2 the oil boom has caused demand to quickly exceed supply and housing investors are being cautious cause the got burned in the 1980s oil boom.

Dont worry. Since theres still some space here, people will populate it all up, thinking they're accomplishing something, and ruin it just like everywhere else.

Naw it sucks. People from CA can't take the cold, wind, wide open spaces or lack of women in bikinis. Besides, there are only two freeways in the whole state so CA people don't know how to drive here. This is fly-over-country, just keep flying from one coast to the other...

I was born and mostly raised here. I love the state. It's quiet and that's what I like. Just whatever you do, don't move to Minot..that's not a good place if you've watched the news.. I live in Bismarck, Its decently sized need a few places here that we have in fargo but I can get everything I need within a 10 min or less drive. The winters might be long and bitter, but the spring summer and falls are quite nice. I know I might get some hate on my comment. But North Dakota is pretty nice for what it needs to be. Nothing too fancy, but a lot of open range if you like that type of beauty I guess.

Yes I'd like to apologize for my previous post it was a rather broad generalization from a person raised on southern hospitality they aren't rude just different from what I was used to but the old place grows on you that's for sure however the snow cold and ice doesn't Haha so gotta love being frozen (this climate is the exact same climate with varying extremes as siberia)

I have lived in 7 states and found pros and cons to all places. I have in all these states nice people and not nice people. I'm pretty sure you can find rude people in any state. North Dakota prides itself on their hospitality as a whole. We are off the map as far as anything a tourist would be interested in as there are no mountains, very few trees, lots of small rural farm and ranch towns. What we do have is hard working mostly honest god fearing people who in most cases would bend over backwards to help ya out if needed. Yes we have snow lots of snow and yes we have temps that go way way below zero every winter but we also have home with furnaces and cars with heaters and know how to go buy warm clothing so really its not an issue...unless your thing is to walk around in the nude. I for one love winter, hockey, skiing, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, ice fishing, sledding and getting cozy in a nice warm home watching the snow fly out the window. If your looking for a slow way of life we have hundreds of little rural towns with just a few hundred people where you can probably buy a house for dirt cheap (unless your in the western oil boom area)...I know people who rent 3 bedroom houses in rural towns with a acre yard for under 400 a month. We dont have cities but we do have Fargo and Bismarck and few other towns that have all the modern amenities you can find in big cities. Good roads, great schools, and reasonable living cost. The eastern half of he state is all farming and damn good farm land at that. The western half of the state is all ranch land and oil well industry. The missouri river cuts the state down the middle. On the western side of the missouri river the soil is all sandy and the climate is more arid or dry. On the eastern side of the missouri river the land is not sandy but is black dirt hence the farming. There is a beauty to the vast open flat landscape but if your not used to it you may find it bleak at best. I have friends from all over the united states living here and never heard any of them complain about anything really. We do have satelite, cable tv, computers, hospitals, low to no crime, no racial issues, and nice airports for anyone feels they need out. I do know a couple people who live in tipi's but for the most part we have houses, condo's, apartments. I guess i wanted to post on here mainly because of the one person who posted that people here are RUDE..really?...well i got news for you honey, there are rude people everywhere..ever think maybe it's you makes people rude?...just a thought. One thing I dont like is when people come to nice little sweet innocent north dakota with all their out of state baggage and attitude and and want to try make it like the crap hole place the left. We have roads that leave the state just like we do roads that enter the state. Please, if you for some reason dont like North Dakota move on so us who are here dont have to deal with your bickering. We are all proud americans, we like our canadian nieghbors....i've lived in some pretty nice places (cascades in oregon, colorado mountains, seattle, lake tahoe, hawaii) just to name a few but i am from north dakota and this is home for me. My guess is if your from a nice place with lots of scenery and outdoor adventures your probably not going to like north dakota unless your big on hunting(mind you we are not redneck folk tho)...Economy here is ok and as a state we are the only one with a surplus of money thanks to the oil boom....

^ You could try by not coming across as desperate, or a dirtbag. ^
Maybe instead of instant gratification, you could seek a woman that could keep you happy for more than one day, and not rob you after an hour.
Also, it's horny, not horney.

I live in ND, so I guess that makes me part of the "not nice" category.

I wanted to add that altho I live in Minnesota now I have lived in north Dakota, and if your from a big city, there is nothing like being in western ND and going outside late at night and looking at the stars,my god you never dreamt there were so many, it's like a star wars movie, and you hold your breath with the still of the night, and you know there has to be a god that made all this. Thank you
