Yes oman, i went all of sunday and most of monday without sleeping so the 3.5 hours i got last night felt great! Like goofysoul32 i can see how much i will particularly enjoy this forum. I tend to isolate myself and not feel i have a safe outlet to discuss things and you all do understand. Thanks so much for the warm warm welcome. Take care y'all.

I am not real clear on that but I do need to eat 3 meals and snacks in between otherwise, I get this lacy pattern in my eyes and start to pass out. My doctor says it is because I am eating too many carbs but my diabetic website says just the opposite.

actually, I was talking to someone at diabeticconnect. I need to look for an article. That is a good suggestion. He hasn't been real helpful with regard to this. I asked him when I was first diagnosed what my blood glucose levels should be. He said as long as they weren't over 500 or under 20 I was okay. In either case, I would be in the hospital. s They have been real helpful with regard to this.

Hello everyone! I'm new at this website, but finding my way around. Proud to be here with such a good group, one of several that fit my situation(s).

UUUUmmmm I have a loss of pigment in both retinas in a rare form. Creates multiple blind spots. A person with normal vision has a blind spot, and doesn't see it, I don't see mine either, but they exist. The effect is I have a hard time resolving moving objects, which means I can't operate vehicles or moving machinery safely... so I don't drive. That definitely effects one's life. Yet, if things are not moving on me I can see pretty well. I can't read without reading glasses. There is a little distortion where sometimes things that are straight look kind of wavy...

I thank God for the sight I have, and that I can do most things without impediment.

I find this interesting.....

Well, going back about 8 years I was in an accident. I have had 13 surgeries to date including spinal surgery, multiple disc replacements in the low back (not fusion), 6 knee surgeries, colon and phynxer muscle surgery, my gut cut open, esophagus work, some nerve damage work.... While recovering from one knee surgery I had a blood clot go to my chest and have never experienced such pain in all my life. Ended up in the ER / Hospital for 1 week. My last surgery was about 1 1/2 months ago.

It took the docs years before they would do anything in the beginning, and all they did was pump you full of pain killers which in turn trash my stomach and gall bladder and it is difficult enjoying food. I also have acid reflux and problems keeping food down; I stopped meds years ago and have been trying to heal on my own.

The good news is I am walking again without a walker or crutches, but I cannot run and all the sports and fun I used to have are gone. I used to ride a motorcycle, scuba dive, bowl, dancing, etc.... I am still in therapy (at least for one more month).... and I think they are going to cut me loose as they have done everything they can.

People and friends that see me say I look fine but they cannot see what is happening inside of me. My son (that I love to death) is now almost 18 yrs old and has seen me at my worst. It has not helped being a single dad too. Anyway, my son has been flying since he was 14 years old and is a full blown pilot. He has been teaching me how to fly (as it seems this is the only thing that does not hurt) and now that he is older, it has been the best times of my life as we do a lot together.

He is going to be going to an aeronautical college soon and we are even talking about packing up and moving to his college area, renting a home and still living together while he is in college. I have spent my retirment and savings for my son and do not regret it at all - he is worth it; especially for all that I have put him through since my injury. In time, I know if I work at it I can get more mobility and hopefully do something productive for work aside from my disability. It has taken 8 years to get to this point so I do not expect it to completely heal overnight. I plan on going back to a gym and slowly trying to build myself back up.

Dating has been ackward and have avoided most women. I do still chat with some, but it is difficult trying to go out to dinner or lunch knowing you get sick on eating food; not being able to dance or enjoy simple things - even walking any distance still hurts, and it does get lonely. Also, my son feels strange about me seeing other women vs. his mom, but in time it will change.

O.K., so much for my long speech..........

Hi:

Well, my son has had his moments in the past, but as time has gone on he is better able to understand my situation (our situation) vs. when he was younger.... Our three most common things are we both love are Ham Radio, motorcycles, and flying; and even though I am his "dad", we are also becomming more like "buddies". I know in time he will have to move on to his own life but we will always stay in touch one way or another.

I took care of my mother since the 1980's up until 2009 when she died. For many years she had cancer and needed someone to take her to the docs, eye care, surgeries, shopping, etc.... and my son was there with me at her beside when she died. So we have been hit with a "double wammie".... I believe the experience also helped him to better understand about trying to take care of family.

In a recent conversation he even spoke about after graduating from college, about buying a home for us. My credit used to be in the high 700's, after the accident....went to hell. So for us getting back into a home based on my situation is almost impossible. But he now understands if we take and combine our income (after he graduates from college)... we could probably do it. Another thing, even if I had a home and "kicked the bucket", I would end up giving him the home anyway, so this is something that can benefit both of us. We have considered land, pre-fab homes, and a few othe things.... His ideal wish is to live on an air-park (which is a home with a private run-way for airplanes). You also park your plane in the garage. Some of them are isolated and the only access is by flying in... Kinda like being in the country. They have some real nice air-parks, especially in Texas.

With respect to your son and his disc fusion (I am not sure what infusion is....) but on fusion that can cause future problems. What it does is put strain on the discs above and below the fusion area. In time, those disc will need to be replaced too.... it is a cascading effect. The newer technology uses synthetic disc and they move just like a normal disc (that is what I have)... they do not wear out and can never rupture again.

I will admit, that the first 3 months after surgery is so painful due to the nerve problems in the spine, or at least mine, that no oral pain meds or anything will help. I would sleep about 3 hours a day..... pain was horrible. After the 3 month mark the nerve pain in your low back and legs/feet slightly began to subside. As more time went on.... got better; the doc told me it would happen but if I compare how I used to be as to now, I definitely am glad I had the spinal surgery with the disc replacement.

Some docs and insurance carriers say the dis replacement is not tried and true, and they do not know what they are talking about. It has been around for about 5 years and all test have shown it is better than disc fusion, and the cost is about the same. Insurance companys just try to avoid paying for anything and you have to fight them. Never accept disc fusion, go with full replacement.

Juls I know what your son means about that I have lower spine fusion , from L4 L5 s1 fused, pedicule screws and rods, it is so painful , the disc above are now causing pain in the right side of my body but the next to be done is the neck I have buldging disc in the neck area that keeps me with a headache at all times, Im just waiting till my daughter is a little older just so if something was to go wrong she won't regret me for having surgery!

I have not been on for many months but seeing these posts from NH and you jul I must put my 2 cents in.... Heres my story...

I began having back trouble 12 yrs ago when my back went into spasms out of no where. Emergency room sent me to specialist and was diagnosed with detiorating disc disease (DDD). First it was 2 bad discs then 5, so on now it after 3 surgeries over 45% of my spine has been "fixed" and still having ongoing problems. Now fighting to NOT having another one. Was agreeing to doing one few months ago until doc told me exactly what he wanted to do. Rip out rods add bigger, and replace and more fusion and blah, blah.

Anyway as far as what has been done so far is...
1st surgery: L5-S1 fusion and plated and screws (2003)
2nd surgery: T11-T12-L1 Replaced, fusion and rod,screwed 2006
3rd surgery: T10-L2 removed rod and screws from 2006. T10 fusion and L2 replaced and rod replaced and bigger to include T10 and L2. Done 2007 (one year and 5 days later than 2nd surgery!)
Now trying to keep them away from my back because they want to cut open my side and remove rib to go in through the side to get to spine because need to add to T level. shoulder blades and arms are going numb.
Replace, and rip out rod again and probably more fusion....

I guess longer story short, what is so dang frustrating is I'm still walking with cane. Cant leave my house some days, cant do anything for very long because arms and hands go numb so I just give up and then became too depressed to care about anything for months!!!
Cant take my kids anywhere, my son hates me! and sometimes I even have to use a walker that I had buy because I needed the one with a seat and medicare would not pay for it.
Sometimes (alot of times) I do want to give up BUT then I think about my bipolar/troubled soul/anxiety ridden daughter that wont go outside at all without me and she hates crowds and nobody knows how to handle her but me. And I just could not give up on her, I have to homeschool her cause she cant go to school.

Sorry didnt mean for this to be a book... I'll shut up now! didnt mean to vent that much!
