We suggest mining gold here...Just need a shovel and a pan!Just be sure you ain't claim jumping...But there's places you can still go owned by the land management (BLM). Just be sure on checking regulations on what can be used on the river. Cheers!

There are jobs in the city ,like Fairbanks. Depends on what you can do. From now to may gold is hard ta get out, lol. Good ta have several things goin. Make sure ta have LOTS of cash when ya get here.Enought ta get set up fer at least a year or more. Most good jobs they want ta see you'll stay ,so ya need ta get a year here under yer belt. Ya need a really good 4X4 vehical or cash ta get one.Get a subscription to the Daily News Miner in Fairbanks. It's the paper & will give ya an idea of cost of livin & jobs etc. The classifieds are great ta see what things sell for. If ya drive ya gotta get cleared with Canada & if ya come up on the ferry it can take a year in advance sometimes ta get tickets. Get a copy of The Mile Post at any book store down there. It has all info fer Canada & the ferries & roads etc. Just do the research & make sure yer ready & prepaired & it will be fun.Other wise it can be bad. Hope this helps ya.

The job part is what has kept me from moving up there. In full disclosure, I have not seriously looked. But that may change this year.
I have been going to Alaska every year for 12 years now. Mostly in the summer to fish, but I have also been up in the winter to ice fish and am planning to get some snowmobiling in this winter, if Caribou Lake has some decent snow. I have friends in Cooper Landing.
I would most likely live in one of the suburbs of Anchorage, as that is probably best for job prospects. I could use some helpful information from someone "in the know" up there.
My fiancé came up with me last summer and loved it. As a matter of fact, she extended her vacation. BTW-we didn't become engaged until I saw she had the infatuation for that great state like I do. I LOVE Alaskans for the most part. They remind me of where I grew up before all of the transplant northeasterners moved in. : (

down here on the kenai rentals are about the same as everywhere but here cheap cabins generally mean an out house and no runnin water. Kinda funny that alaska has a thriving water delivery industry. Also every laundramat has showers attesting to how many people wash and dry clothes and fit in a shower. cyn from Vermont who is now livin in alaskas kenai peninsula. Good luck Cyn
