Actually, the entire state is an expensive place to live! Some places more than others, though. Maui, I would have to agree, is the most expensive. The Big Island West side (Kona)has more night life and activities than the East Side (Hilo) wich pretty much closes down by 9 pm..lol. Are you planning to move to Hawaii or Hawi? Just a warning: if you are planning to move to Hawi, that is as about as small town as you can get. Oahu has some nice places, but if city is what you are trying to get away from, most of that island is not what you are looking for. And, please research the place in which you plan to live in. Not all people are the most accepting of...mmm...non-islanders.
Hope this helps a bit.

im not really sure were i want to move to in the islands but im grateful for your info yeah i figerd that the locals dont like mainlanders ever web site i look up on info for hawii says that the locals dont like main landers i think it has a lot to do with the fact that america has exploted hawii for a long time and i get that but they dont have to act like that to us all i mean damn its like the whole thing with african american people saying its my fault for slavery well im not 200 hundred years old so i dont see how i had anything to do with what people in the past did its just retarded and for the people of hawii are sapossed to be happy people they dont seem to act that way towards people it crazy all i want to do is be some where i can live in peace and they make me feel like im bring the plage with me and that im to be avoided.

I have also seen many websites that make these claims pertaining to the treatment of non-locals, but I really think that many of the claims have been exagerrated. Yes, there are some locals that are ignorant and intolerant, but most are NOT! My mother moved here from the mainland over 40 years ago and has never had a problem. Her motto is simple: respect the people and place in which you are. If you can adapt to the culture and respect the people and the land, I feel that you will get along just fine. You know how they say, "When in Rome....". I hope you don't base your decision on the negative experiences of others. There may be a reason that these people have not had a good experience. Hawaii is beautiful and so are the people.

Its all good "remoreus"! A lot of people seem to have the same impression about moving to the islands. I agree that it is retarded that people are still hating on "outsiders". For example, I'm part Hawaiian but my whole life has been centered around people of many different cultures thus I've learned to accept and appreciate them. I have many friends of different ethnic backgrounds. So, I just want to let you know that if you have "ALOHA"(type of love), people will show you "ALOHA". Its kind of like good karma in a way.
As far as trying to live here, it is tough. I live in Honolulu and rent, gas, and other necessities are expensive. Rush Hour traffic is also hectic during the morning hours and worse if you have to travel north or west in the afternoon. I've lived in the city of Honolulu my whole life but if I had the chance I would live on another island probably Maui or Big Island cause I have family there.
In your search for living peacefully, I would suggest "Kauai". It is nicknamed "the garden isle" because of its "eden" like beauty. I'm pretty sure that the scenery and fresh air alone would give you some peace of mind! And people I know from Kauai say its way better than Oahu but I think its just a bias statement. If your looking for a place in the "country" but still want to be close to the city life, I would suggest the "North Shore" of Oahu. The community there is filled with people from around the world and sometimes they have to much "ALOHA". Well, JAH BLeSs you in your quest for peace and ALOHAZ!
