When I write girls on here, I sometimes say, "Hey babe how are you? My name is Eli and I would love to talk to you.
I get responses from, "Don't call me that, I'm not your babe." to "I'd rather be called beautiful."
Is it that these women think they are God's gift to men or what? Please help me understand.

There is the right answer. I call my GF babe all the time, she smiles and giggles. She loves it, I love saying it. However, she is my GIRLFRIEND I did not call her babe before we started dating.
For the first few emails, keep babe, sweetie, cutie, sweetcheeks, ect out of the emials. Once you know her name, call her by that. Till then, just " Hi there, I thought I'd drop a line" or something like that.

I guess I didn't think it was that big of a deal as some girls make it out to be.
I do state my name in the messages I send so I figure the girl would send it in her reply.
Ha but I get pwned instead!

Not even Sweet Thang? Sorry, could not resist. my GF's 14 year old girl always calls me that, jokingly.
I was no cassanova when I was still on the market, but I even knew that woman did not like the pet names till there was a relationship established. I think you and Sette would agree a boyfriend or husband calling you babe, or sweetie is different then some guy emailing you a first contact note on a dating site

I know when I lived in the north I was offended by the word "baby"... unless by a SO.
Since moving to the south.... EVERYONE is "baby"!! It took me a couple of months to NOT be offended. That was when I realized it was just another word.
Should've seen me though when the AC repairman at my apartment complex called me "baby"... I almost reported him!!! I called my g/f up and told her.... that's when she told me he meant no offense by it... it's just a "southern thang"....

Its a little condescending and assuming, when the woman doesn't know you, at least that's what I gather from white middle class women. I can see their point, just too familiar too fast, not respectful. "baby" is something you call a girlfriend or wife when she is in a good mood.

In my opinion, terms like 'babe', 'honey', 'sweetie', etc. are terms of endearment...affectionately given/shared as a result of a relationship. An email from one stranger to the next is not a relationship. I would disregard your email because I would think you were presenting clues much as players do...attempting to emotionally connect prematurely...with an agenda to connect physically as quickly as possible.

Yep, very eloquently stated. The other point which someone else made, is different regoins handle things like this differently. I know some parts of the country older ladies call everyone sweetie or sugar. So, like everything else in life, the context has to be taken into account. Is it a little old lady, raised in the south calling everyone sugar? Or is it a horny 18 year old guy trying to get cheap sex by calling a girl sweetie or babe?

I don't want to be confused with a guy that attempts to "emotionally connect prematurely." I use anything from, 'Hey there how are you? My name is Eli," to "Hey how's it going? My name is Eli and I would love to chat sometime if you're interested," etc. I am glad I posted this topic because I have gotten some really good feedback. Overall, I think most girls would not prefer it so I think I will take it out of my vocabulary for now.
I wasn't expecting to get this many replies either! Ha this is insane!

I don't like when someone I don't know or barely know calls me honey, sugar, babe or beautiful. It's an instant turn off. If we are "involved" that is a different matter. I've found this practice is much more common in the south and it's a point of contention with all my northern girlfriends too.
Op, this has NOTHING to do with someone thinking they are God's Gift...it's about RESPECT. Since you've encountered this reaction several times might I encourage you to just address women by their profile name? If you reach the point where you're emailing and talking use their given name. If a relationship develops, you can determine if a term of endearment is appropriate.
If you're writing an adult woman on a dating site it's a given you thought she was attractive or you wouldn't have written. We like it much better when it's apparent you've READ OUR PROFILE and write 1 or 2 original lines, ie: "I noticed we're both CPA's and have Dalmations".
Let me know how that works for your hotcheeks.

And "baby" doesn't (offend you)? Think about it ... When I look at a man in the heat of passion, and call him "daddy," I am most certainly NOT thinking about my - or anyone else's - father. It's a term of endearment some women use when a man makes them feel safe, protected and cared for. Why a man has the need to call a grown woman "baby" has yet to be defined. I don't mind it; just don't see where there's a difference ... You know, it's like some women (not me), say "come to mamma" ... they may say that in bed, or when they're rolling dice ... go figure.
Sick and offended? It's NOT a literal term ...

Mmmmm...rocket's right...it's a regional thing. I'm from Vegas, it's not nearly as common there as it is in the South. I don't enjoy the pet names; it seems condescending to me. I don't get outwardly upset, however. But I may bristle a little on the inside.

Most women don't like those nicknames right off the bat. We love those names once we meet a guy that we are attracted to and interested in.
We don't want to be called those names by a stranger. It is demeaning and very inappropriate.
When one of my sexy guy friends called me sweetheart, I loved it. Because we know each other and share great conversation about each other's world.
So if you want to be more succesful, then save the endearing names for the one you have established a relationship with.

Yes, so very true. Plus the term "babe" to a woman you just met or trying to meet can come off sounding like you're a "player." Think about this.....would you like a woman's first correspondence to you to be "Hey dude" (first impressions ARE everything and do set the tone.) Hope this helps!!
