Tom Holt if you like your Sci Fi with a bit of British humour and fantasy. Theodore Sturgeon is you want to read some of the best and most under-rated stories there are. Harlan Ellison's short stories range from very mild to keep-you-awake horrific.
Asimov for stories heavy on the SCIENCE, Phillip K D*ck for heavy on the preaching.
Keith Laumer's Retief series if you work in a bureaucracy.
Esther Friesner to get a non-politically correct female author into the mix (find her "Chicks" series of collected stories).
Also do a search and find io9.com for a good generic online Sci Fi resource.

Read every sci fi mag back in the late 40's early fiftys hide them behind the text books in class! " IF","Astounding" and a bunch of others . They were small mags and I think about 50 cents each? Issac Asimov, Willy Ley, and dozens of other future Nebular prize winners! A great mind awakening time. I have a hard time doing the fantasy stuff that is out now? Give me another Dune series or an Heinlein tale any time.

There's the Honor Harrington series (think Horatio Hornblower in space)
Also the Safehold series.

Definitely L. Ron Hubbard should be added to this list...
Robert Sheckley - early 70s sci-fi author. He wrote a tiny short story compilation called The People Trap that just blew my mind. He has other full novels where one was turned into a movie called FreeJack with Emelio Estevez but it was loosely based off the book Immortals, Inc. MUST READ IT, go get it neeeeeow!! lol
Lance Olsen - i suggest Tonguing the Zeitgeist and then moving onto his other works. This guy writes some pretty imaginative stuff. I can't even explain it, i think the genre is called cyberpunk. It'll twist your mind, though, that's for sure.
Hm, who else?
I think the last sci-fi I read was Philip K D*ck (ugh, i'm new so the forum gods got mad, had to censor myself!!) and I had to choke it down. So, yeah... the book... omg... edit edit edit!!

Wow. You and me both buddy. I have read all of the Dune books. Seen both of the Dune movies. Read the Foundation Trilogy when I was 14. (What can I say, I was a weird kid.) To include Brave New World and 1984. (Man I really was weird.) lol Enjoyed reading Kevin J. Anderson's Saga of the Seven Suns. Plus many, many more my friend.

Some of my favorite sci-fi novels and a brief description of each.
Tunnel In The Sky - Robert Heinlein
A group of colonists get stranded on an alien planet and must learn to survive without any of the technology they had becoe so dependant on. Set in a future where tchnology has become so advanced you could litterally walk from Earth to any other planet in the galaxy via a portal that looks like a tunnel.
The Caves Of Steel - Issac Asimov
A murder mystery about an agorophobic detective partnered up with an extremely human-like robot.
The Last Legion (the complete series) - Chris Bunch
After ten milennia of prosperity the human confederation crumbles almost over night, leaving just one last military outpost at the edges of its territory to defend the Cumbre system, its civilian population, and everything the confederation stood for.
Sphere - Michael Crichton
A space craft is discovered at the bottom of the ocean by the United States Navy. Civilian scientists are brought in to unravel the mysteries of the space craft, but discover that what is inside of it is an even bigger mystery than where it came from.
Link - Walt Becker
Indiana Jones style adventure.
Fast paced, globe trotting, action packed, and some alien skeletons that may hold the key to human evolution.
The Carrier - Holden Scott
A grad student rushes from the east coast to the west coast, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake, as he races against the clock to save a loved ones life with his newly created cure for cancer.
The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (The complete series) - Douglas Adams
Mild mannered Arthur Dent finds himself being drug across space and time by his friend Ford Prefect after the Earth gets destroyed to make way for the construction of a new hyperspace express route.
From restaurants to never ending house parties, and even to the most important cricket match ever played, he scours the galaxy for a new place to call home and the meaning of his existance.

Would Pern be considered more fantasy or sci-fi though? It's a good mix of the two in my opinion.

Ok I'm slightly appalled that I have not seen or missed the mention of George R R aMartin. Not only does he write he edited the first &2nd series called
Wildcards
About an alien race that tests a virus on human kind?????? At first 80% mortality, 15-17% horrible mutations, 3-5% get awesome super powers (multi author antholgy)one of my favorite characters is Croyd Creed aka the Sleeper when he goes to sleep he doee so for days sometimes months and wakes up altered avdifferent uber ability or horrifying mutation he never knows and fights sleeping "when in good form" You will laugh be astonished and even cry at times.
Also love a series entitled Phule's Army firetrucking hilarious can't find one or remember author look for it.

Hmm, old thread but I'll hop on. Asimov, Heinlein, and Harry Harrison for starters. I love the warhammer 40k books, specifically gaunts ghosts, and anything with space marines. I also like anything with a twist. Saw George r r Martin mentioned, and his book Tuff voyaging was awesome. Margaret Weiss had a departure into sci fi with her lost Kong series, galactic fantasy that was pretty good.
