I have sooooo many!! At my gym I have a couple of girls who walk around with a PURSE talking on the phone making their rounds trying to get noticed! Also girls in the locker room applying make up to workout..wtf!? And as far as working out I hate when guys try to one up or correct my workouts! I appreciate the help but just because im a girl doesnt mean I cant lift a barbell with weights on it!!! I actually had some guy add 10lbs to a leg press that already had 270lbs on it just to one up me!

Showoffs and Bullshitters quite honestly. Why put up 275 pounds on a bench press when you need all the help in the world to do one half-assed, bullshit rep? All so you can say you lifted 275? Just shake my head in disgust as he takes MY bench time at the gym......gamer

I agree. Do a weight you can push I say 5-10 reps. I sometimes will go overload and I am by no means bragging. I will do 315 on bench for 5 then have my partner help with 2-3 more. My gripe is dudes in the squat rack loading it up 500-600 plus and doing half reps and then leaving and my workout partner is a 120lb female. Come on. I yelled at the last two dudes you done? Then unload your weight.

Badasses who are too awesome to remove their own weights when they are finished.
Or badasses who are in there to put on a show. Loading up more weight than they can even come close to doing correctly. Not only are they wasting their own time, they are taking up equipment others could be using correctly. That second part probably only matters between 4:30 - 7 pm.
Universal I can't find a bench or squat rack time.

Most of my peeves have been mentioned but right now my biggest pet peeve is because it's summer groups of high school kids come to the gym and take up a bunch of space and machines, barely do anything and just seem to use the gym as a place to hang out. C'mon! It's a gym! We're here to workout!

I agree. If the lack of consideration doesn't bug you enough, then it can be that they stick up half the machine and don't even have the damn decency to wipe it down. and half the time, they're bullshitting with the weights just to try to impress some women. Nonsensical bullshit like that irks me.......gamer

only people that i have ever seen b*tch about people doing curls in a squat rack:
A. cannot do a proper squat to save their ass
B. cannot do a proper squat with enough weight to warrant the squat rack
C. say its uncool to curl in the squat rack just to sound cool because its the trendy thing to sound like the gym "sheriff"

My gym pet peeve is the uncertified, expired or a lower level certified (no practical or internship for certification) wanna-be trainer giving out bad advice to gym patrons. It is o.k. to give some helpful advice or lend a spot if necessary because that is good gym etiquette but to tell someone what workout is best for them to do is wrong. If you do not know the persons background or have given them a proper pre screening interview along with a medical background check you could injure the patron. I see these people in and out of the gym (you know who you are, I see you in these posts sometimes) giving suggestions that may have worked for themselves and think that everyone should be doing their workout.
Everyone's body is different and should not be treated like it is a carbon copy off of an assembly line. If that were true then we should all have the same physiques and not need to tweak our workouts since the same one would work for our entire life. I have nothing against trying something new, that is what makes working out fun and invigorating. Just do not tell someone that they have to exercise the same way you do. We all need to do something a little different from each other to compliment our bodies and lifestyles. I see the same people going into the gym, working out the same way on the same machines with little or no improvement and seem to be content with that outcome. If that is your goal then more power to you but even as a Certified Person fitness Trainer I do not interrupt someones workout as long as they are not hurting themselves or other gym patrons. The regulars generally know who the trainers are in the gym and if they do not know they will go to the front desk to ask for some help.
I usually will mingle with the patrons who know me while keeping an eye out for members who are attempting something that their bodies are not ready for and I do not need a know-it-all going around encouraging additional injuries. I prefer spending more time training people and not having to call 911 most of the time. Besides, most of the physique issues in most gyms have nothing to do with lifting techniques or exercise prescription but their diet (80% diet, 15% exercise and 5% heredity. You can consume more calories than you can work off. You cannot work off a bad diet!). If everyone would adapt a diet to fit their lifestyle necessities they would probably make some impressive gains in and out of the gym. I always refer someone new to dieting to the American College of Sports Medicine or My Pyramid to get started.
Good gym etiquette can be maintained if we take the time to look out for each other and remind the know-it-all trainers that they need to tone it down or take their unsolicited advice elsewhere, hopefully not here.

The Personal Trainers who are yelling loud commands at there clients, and i'm at the next station trying to concentrate on MY workout. I am a paying member also. The owners should bar them from the gym, unless just his/her client can hear the trainer.
Not all of us yell at our clients. You should be able to remind them to politely train their clientele with less volume. We are trained to have respect for the other patrons in the gym, at least those of use who have legitimate certifications. If they do not honor your request then you should take it up with the ownership. If that is still not working you can file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. You are a paying patron and should have the same respect as the other patrons. Unless your gym sells different level memberships that include a trainer volume clause.

Full range of motion isn't really a requirement unless a person plans being judged in a powerlifting contest. Personally, I have to stop about a couple of inches above my chest on the bench. If I touch my chest, my shoulder joints eventually start to hurt badly. All you need to go down to is where your upper arm is parallel to the floor in the bottom position. At that point, your chest muscle is pretty stretched out. Of course, if I could touch my chest without eventual shoulder joint pain, I would do it, but health and safety are first.
I agree. The arms should come down to a ninety degree angle on the bench press and do not lock out the elbows at the top of the move. If you need to go down further then switch to a fly. That exercise works the overall chest better than the press. Again, make sure you do not let the weights go lower than your chest and keep the elbows soft. You do not need to clang the weights together at the top either.
Happy lifting!

heres one.....A fat guy started to lift weights next to me today....after useing a weight that was way to heavy for him to rep with good form he went up in weight.....again horrible form (this was in squat)....I finish another set of ten useing my weight with was 225.....and then took a sip of my water....he looks at me and ask why do u use such a light weight? I laughed at him and said thats becuase I go all the way down till my a** hits the chair, unlike your half rep ones.....after getting mad and called me a b*tch I told him to try........I proved my point when he tried, went all the way down and didnt get back up.....after letting the weight fall off him on the safty bars he said he would of got it if he didnt just do his set.....I said what ever and did another set of ten ......he then got rude again and said you are going to far down.....All I could do was look at him with a dumb look on my face.....I was speechless .....Shit like that pisses me off lol......sorry story was so long for anyone who does read this
If this continues to be a problem you can report this individual to the management. If that does not help, some gyms will patronize members who are management favorites, report the gym to the Better Business Bureau. The BBB can help you get a refund if the matter is not resolved.

Attention getting tactics:
1. The guy doing curls with dumb bells. Instead of using controlled breathing techniques he screeches all sorts of loud noises.
2. He, then, drops the weights on the floor.
I asked a trainer once if I did that will it give me bigger gains?
I hope the answer was "no".

Cracks me up! LOL There is no need for that.

After reading through all of the pet peeves it looks like personal gym etiquette is not high on anyone's list. Things happen in the gym as well outside of the gym, such as people looking at you and finding things not where you expected them to be. We all have to work together to get along with each other in and out of the gym. I understand that the concentration in the gym is at a higher level than outside of it so the little quirks that occur within the gym seem to be more intensified. You are probably on the move more outside the gym to even notice the stares and lustful looks but in the gym you may feel confined and vulnerable. When time is limited and equipment is not where it should be we sometimes become aggravated and want to complain. Outside the gym we probably do not notice all the out of place items that we pass daily. If we spent as much attention to the details outside the gym as we do in it there would be less blooper videos circulating on the internet.
Encouraging everyone to foster some common etiquette would be a start but we have to remember that what makes for a pleasing workout to one may annoy another. There are some basic ground rules in most gyms for everyone to abide by but it is almost impossible to list every detail on the rule sheet. We are hoping that most of the patrons are adult enough to know what is respectful behavior and what is not. Just as a police officer cannot make everyone conform to specific guidelines we too can only list the most offensive infractions and hope everyone can get along.
By the way, while everyone is complaining about their neighbor they don't seem to notice the invisible elves that thoroughly wipe the equipment down, put the weights away for you and pick up the towels you threw on the floor after doing your dirty and expecting someone else to wash it for you. If your gym does not do anything like the above I highly recommend you move your membership before you contract an incurable disease. Everyone seems to expect the next person to pick up the slack without realizing that if there were not someone behind the scenes cleaning up your dirty work you would really have something to complain about.
The gym is a place for a person to wear their bodies down and build them back up stronger and with more vigor than before. When this happens we feel more intimidated to be seen at our most vulnerable moment. It can be a better experience if you bring a friend along who can encourage you or befriend some of the management so you can feel like someone has your back. This confined space with a sense of vulnerability can make your experience an unhappy one. But if you can have one or more of your friends there with you for added encouragement then you should have a more rewarding experience.

New one. This is what I call the Bar-Tenders. A person who's whole workout routine consist of the bench press and dumbbell press, all while having chicken legs and have little to no foundation elsewhere. Cosntantly every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I see this person doing the same damn exercise to the point where it becomes embarassing. And to make it worse, he has the nerve to come in, smell, and don't wipe doen the bench for others to use. I mean honestly......gamer

I just can't stand it when people don't wipe equipment or benches. I know we got adrenaline pumpin, when we just banged out a good set, but it should be an understanding that u don't wanna feel or touch another person's sweat... Plus I don't wear gloves cause I want a stronger grip on everything, so I wipe everything. And I hate people who are talking and holding up a machine or equipment. I don't care how u use ur time at the gym, but if ur using a bench, chair, or equipment, and you're not doing anything, let the next person get on while u talk. I'll ask right away to use something, and the answer everytime, is " I have just one more set." I'm thinking in my head, well stop talking! Rant/

That's another thing that pisses me off. People leaving their weight on the bench press machine, don't rerack the weights, and then the next sap that can't even lift the weight is stuck with taking the weights off while getting ready for their workouts. Seen that happen too often for my liking......gamer

Haha I'm a trainer at a gym and what bugs me is when a Pearson pays me 100 dollars for a 1hour training session and he rather douse not show up or he douse not try...Haha and my personal favorite is when people pick way to heavy of a weight and they have to use there full body to lift the weight.

Yeah, it bugs me when people pay personal trainers that much for an hour too.
Kidding.

a) Body Odor - Please wear deodorant
b) Wipe the machines down or don't use them!
c) Anyone that wears PJs/makeup/fancy hair style - You're there to work out, not look like a model. If that's the case, be useless somewheres else so that I can use the machine.
this.

Literally lol'd at this!
I don't wipe shit down. I don't use a lot of machines though so those f*ggots who do can wipe it down for themselves. I usually smell too, either from gas or body odor. Don't like it? Go to f**king curves. I'm tired of metros turning every gym in the country into an epicenter for f*ggotry.
Chances are I don't annoy anyone though because I'm usually in the corner of the gym behind a cloud of chalk and the only reason you know I'm even in the gym is because you hear the clammoring of heavy a** weight. I'm a constant reminder to pussies everywhere that what their doing is the reason why they are weak and small and not because of "genetics."
