My favorite book is a relatively old one now. It is called "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 1972" by Hunter S. Thompson. I said it was old. Hunter was the creater of a form of journalism that was referred to as "gonzo journalism." He was a great writier who unfortunately lost control to his personal demons and he commited suicide about four years ago. His writing was always focused on facts but he mixed in his real or fantasy based drug rantings so gonzo journalism is a mix of realtity (as seen and accounted for by Hunter) mixed with amazing and complex humor and fantasy. He is best remembered for writing about the year he spent with the Hell's Angels, but since I like politics, I go with "the campaign trail."

Take care,
Ruralfriend

Wasn't such a big fan of Hell's Anges.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Generation of Swine were great.

I have Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 but have yet to make time for it.

A bit kiddy, but "Ella Enhanted" will always be my favorite. Followed by "Old Magic" a modern-meets-medieval romance novel and "Flowers for Algernon". Short but sad.

I read anything with a catchy title and prologue...

There are so many great novels out there that it would be waaaaaay too difficult for me to just pick a single one.
The closest I could manage would be a toss up between the books in Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series, or Tim Dorsey's novels about a serial killer named Serge Storms.

Quote from tercium:
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is a good choice

I was reading that when 9/11 happened. I was bike touring through Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, and Cedar Breaks NM. One day I'm shuttling through the tunnel headed out the east side of Zion and somebody stopped by the side of the road (taking photos, just like me) mentions they heard a plane hit one of the Trade Towers. I didn't hear anything more until the next morning on the radio in the Glendale KOA, both towers had fallen. No wonder everybody had seemed so quiet in all the diners and such along the way.

Meanwhile, in the book they're chugging up the river with all its threatening shadows to find Kurtz.

The whole trip turned so surreal. I never saw any video of 9/11 until after I got home over a week later. I spent that entire week wondering which of my friends had been picked up for questioning (there was one who was from Iran), which of my friends had their lives threatened (there was one who was from Brazil), and whether or not I would be returning to martial law here behind the Zion Curtain.

I don't really have a favorite, I've read so many good books, but here are some that come to mind

Riddle-Master - Patricia A McKillip (I like a lot of her books, I'm in to the whole "magic" thing)
His Dark Materials (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass) - Phillip Pullman; I love how the books are written as adolescent/childrens' books, but it takes a mature, even adult, mind to fully understand them

Reflections in Blood - Michael Thomas (biographical novel told in story form)

My Sister's Keeper - Jodi Picoult (did NOT like the movie, they destroyed it)

Speaking of Jodi Picoult... I've not read one of her books that I didn't love, she's fantastic. Her best ones are the REALLY controversial topics, she makes them very intense

The Nessantico Cycle (A Magic of Twilight, A Magic of Nightfall and A Magic of Dawn)- S.L. Farrell, the author really puts you in the book with how descriptive and complex this world is

Of course, The Chronicles of Narnia, and I loved the Harry Potter books and Twilight also.

John Irving knocked one out of the park with that one. I really enjoyed it. I can't say it's in my top 10 or even 20 but, on the other hand, it has a lot of competition.

One of my favorite books of all time is "The Thorn Birds" by Colleen McCollugh. I loved the novel. A few years later they made it into a mini series. I don't usually like the movies after I read the book. This was an exception. I thought the director hit this one the head. From the opening flash down the lane to the end of the story, it was what was in my head.

The other book I enjoyed was 'Water for Elephants'. The movie was graphic, but I loved the book!

I also read a book called 'The Art of Keeping Cool' about a German artist in America when the war broke out and how people immediately treated him as a spy. It was sad, but very good junior high level book.
