It is never easy to break up with someone face-to-face just as it was not easy when you first dated.
The only easiest and selfish way is to do it a coward way e.g SMS, Email, phone and through someone or simply by running to the hills without looking back (avoidance).
The fact is: you owe it to your partner face-to-face break up.
Why is it hard to break up? Some of the main reasons are:
1. Guilt (S/he may committ suicide)
2. Fear of resentment (s/he will hate me)
3. Fear of retaliation usually in a violent manner.
4. Fear of being single again.
it is not easy

I think both men and women do it. When I've done it, it was because I made the decision to be finished with someone for whatever reason, and chose to look forward, and move on... rather than dwell on it.
Sounds cold, but it's really just survival.

I am going through this right now. I was going to propose to this girl. Everything was amazing. She told me how much she loved me and how she was so very "in love" with me. Four days later...dumped via email. No fight. No reason. Just done.

I think she is not necessarily cutting off all feelings - but recognizes something there is either not working or not healthy for her. If she tries to talk about it or explain, she might still care and get pulled back into something that may be "unfixable" between you. Something she just can't deal with and knows it - but she may still care, its just too painful to continue and know it will never work... Or I suppose there could be someone else.

Who did the dumping? You or her? Whoever did it was a coward. Breaking up should be done face to face.

to answer your question: you don't miss what you've never had, and if you find out it was over a misunderstanding that could have been avoided if someone had said why, well, I've never won the lottery and I don't miss it.
