I went to Uganda and loved it. I highly recommend against doing the usual tourist thing an instead going with a humanitarian/missionary group. I was building orphanages there and the experience was far richer and more meaningful than if I had simply visited. You become a part of the culture rather being apart from it. We still did the safari thing for a couple of days (a hippo tried to eat our boat, they're vicious bastards) but living like a local really made the country and the continent come alive in a way that sleeping in a hotel and seeing it by bus couldn't.

I lived in Zaire when I was a boy in the early 70's. Of course, it's called Congo again now. I lived in Kinshasa and went to T.A.S.O.K. I was only 7 and, needless to say, I caught malaria. But other than that, I have only fond memories. Got to go to South Africa too and go to Kruger National Park. Lots of natural wildlife! Wouldn't want to vacation in the Congo nowadays though...
