Been there done this a few different ways... best thing for me.. (and it may or maynot work for you..) Was to put some physical time and space between you for a while..Don't call, don't visit.. Lick the wounds, and sooner or later you will find they are all healed strong. And then you can be friends.
Otherwise it gets messy and complex and you loose track of what you wanted.

Ya'll may as well cue the laugh track now........I've never met this person in the flesh. Another one of those cyber love affairs...glad I'm not permanantly damaged. But I'm just wondering if we did meet, could I accept the friendship without remembering the sadness?

You can either not think about it, or focus on something else to look forward to. It is impossible to "unthink" or "unfeel". Cyberspace, or not, it happened; keep the "leftovers". They may come to your mind in the future at times...giving you reason to smile inwardly.

metu, you asked, "could I accept the friendship without remembering the sadness?"
Only you really can answer this because it depends on how you typically deal with relationships once they have ended (whether online or real life). Do you normally control your mind or does it control you? I'm sure that sounds silly or sarcastic and that isn't what is intended. You've indicated that the friendship is important to you. Bearing that in mind, if the good outweighed the bad, the positive would be an easy thing for me to focus on. However, if I had ANY doubts about how I would feel in person, I wouldn't meet him.
Only the best of wishes to you!!! You're a smart woman; you'll make the right decisions!!!

I thought overnight what you had to say about this, Gr8......I guess I tend to make them "invisible" when dealing with a break-up. I think I was in this quandry because we hadn't met in the flesh...so in my mind it wasn't completely "real". LOL It probably would've been better if there had been a huge ugly scene, complete with all the tears & drama. Now THAT motivates invisibility! I've never been "wistful" about anyone...when it was done, it was done. I suppose this is one of the many lessons I needed to learn about "cyber" & next time I'll be better prepared. Thanks everybody............

metu: That makes perfect sense. I think it can be difficult to get closure with net relationships. I haven't had a "cyber" romance ever since I first got on the net, but looking back in retrospect, I remember the feelings catching me off guard! I'm like you in the sense that when a relationship is over, its over. (My ex-boyfriend was the one exception where I decided to try again). Oh well, I know that once I stop learning, it means I'm dead.
