How do you talk about religion with your kids? Do you and the other parent share the same viewpoint on religion and how to bring up the kids in regard to religion? Have you found any good resources to talk about different viewpoints with kids?

How do you talk about religion with your kids? Do you and the other parent share the same viewpoint on religion and how to bring up the kids in regard to religion? Have you found any good resources to talk about different viewpoints with kids?
Openly. I don't have kids but when I was one and my questions flooded my parents' lives, they provided me with their answer PLUS THE RECOMMENDATION that I did my own research and questioned everything I was told.

My mother raised me the first 10-ish years of my life as a Catholic...
From first grade until third I went to school at a Parochial school.
However, she never asserted anything stated in the bible or in Catechesis... she always said, "It is said that..." and not "It is because..."
Anyway, I was also a very curious kid, who read a lot of astronomy books, formulated a lot of questions... and learned to seek the answers on my own using multiple sources (not just the word of mouth of a single person).

I have 4 kids all teens now. I was open with them and very honest about my feelings on religion I find I it toxic and dangerous but I would never judge my children if they decided to follow a belief system. I always taught them to respect other peoples opinions or beliefs. It can be hard sometimes but if ur hinest and respectful and teach them to be that way also it becomes easier. My daughter is 18 and a strong believer in the Wiccan religion and I am proud of her for standing up for her beliefs.

I tell people to treat the religion talk as you would any other talk about drugs. Respect the desire to experiment, set boundaries on behavior and keep a watchful eye.
For instance: If my child is curious about meth or heroin or crack, I would handle it differently than pot. Fundamentalist organizations are of the non-pot variety. The pot version is a nondenominational liberal-minded bible study. AND as far as a watchful eye, attend bible classes (suck it up-I did)and find out what is being said. Don't just leave the kids at home with the liquor cabinet wide open.
If you do it right, you might end up improving the xian population by sending a "well-versed" intelligent thinker out into the world who can both reason and articulate their thoughts to others without being a pushy jerk. There are also books on comparative religions that present several disciplines in one text including Hindu, Shinto,Janism- you name it.

Comparative religions; google Asatru a folkish religion based on european ethical and moral concepts of the past.

I can tell you how my parents to talked to me about religion. They explained what it is, in a neutral manner, had me go to various churches so I could experience it and see what it was all about. Then I decided at about the age of 8 my view point on the whole thing. It has not changed since.

I pretty much told my kids religion is bullshit. I told them if they want to believe something created everything that is fine, but not to let what someone else says dictate what they believe.

I am not a parent yet but I teach Social Studies. And culture and religion is often associated (even though it is not always taught by teachers or seen as been important). Kids at an early age should be exposed to all types of religions and cultures to help them formulate their own identity as a person. It helps to hopefully eliminate some prejudices or misconceptions.
So with that being said teach and speak openly about all religions without preaching which one is better than the other. Let the child by decide what is best for them. If you force a religion on a child ... it may not always work with what the parent wants.
