Is there anyone in SD that hunts for Wild Asparagus? Or doesn't it grow in your state?

It does NW but most people have "their" patches staked out.

Best area I know of is a section of abandoned railroad right of way and since the ROW was given to the adjacent landowners it's all private land now.

Sadly the fact that it grows on private property doesn't stop most Asparagus Hunters.

In Iowa it is often found growing along the fence lines around cemeteries.
So cemeteries may offer a Dead Giveaway, to finding Wild Asparagus. (Pardon the pun!)

So Nicole who have you hunted with in the past, and do you still hunt for it? And if so have you had much luck this season.
If I go looking for it, I can find enough for a meal, in my travels here and there. Plus we have a small patch in the garden.
But the wild stuff is going to seed now. But we have continued to hunt for it through August. Even though it goes to seed it still sends up new spears, that you can find late in the summer.

I haven't hunted for asparagus. But do you hunt the elusive morel mushroom? There is nothing better than a plate full of sauteed morels and onions.

I tried once. I found 2 in the wild, and 1 in my front yard. Not enough for even a tasting.
I've always wanted to have a trained ushroom Hunter take me out and teach me which ones are good to eat. There are so many varieties to find and eat.
Whgen I was a kid my boss at the Grocery Store lived near Vinton, Iowa. He hunted Puff Ball Mushrooms. He'd find them the size of Volley Balls. He'd invite friends over for Grilled Steaks and ask them if they would like some Mushrooms with their steaks? If they said "Yes" he'd slice off a big slab from one of those volley ball sized mushrooms and lay it over the Steak!
Now I'd love to expierence that once in my life too.
I hear the Mushroom season is over here in Iowa.
Does S.D.'s run longer, or is it the same through the midwest, of 2 wks before Mother's Day to 2 wks after Mother's Day?
