A couple days ago I received an email from a dear friend struggling with the idea that she was destined to live her life alone. She said she seemed to know it even as a child, and wondered whether it was her seeing the future, or was she making the future fit her fears.
I replied that I think we actually do plan our future, but not by sitting down with a list of things to accomplish; rather it's done by reminding ourselves of our fears.
We can, and do, plan our future where careers, choice of permanent locations, etc., are concerned; but when it comes to matters of the heart, where we have to depend on another for a certain degree of happiness while knowing that they also depend on us for the same, we tend to get a little frightened.
When we’re afraid, we tend to be more cautious and that leads to defeatist thoughts, which leads to holding back.
Practiced enough times, it becomes natural to give less the next time around. Problem with that is that, learning from our mistakes, we should be doing the exact opposite and giving more. But, by giving more, we take the chance of losing more…
