he had open heart surgery, lot of blockage I think he told us as well. Hopefully soon he will be strong enough to come in and tell us himself.

First 12 hr goal is to get all the tubes out. Usually by the end of first 12hrs. up in chair, tubes out (Unless problems develop, ) bathed. Dressings, IVs and heart monitor remain. Depending on how initial 12 progresses determines whether your stay in open heart recovery area, go to to ICU or off to telemetry. Usually home within the week, barring major complications.
If in a good cardiac hospital, complications can be nipped in bud and the body put back on track w healing. Key is good experienced staff, giving care and being on top of all the needed observations. Eagle was accurate in his commentary. It comes down to choice. You either choose to do what is necessary or you don't. Open heart is a huge opportunity to get back on track w ones health and how one chooses to live. You can only patch folks together just so much.

hes already home kitty and I dont think he was in long enough, but with VET hospital in Tampa they dont seem to keep you long no matter what. Kinda like a mash unit
I do hope all continues to go well for him.. such a nice man in here

Veteran's hospitals usually ship open heart surgery patients out to the local CABG center. Not likely he had procedure at VA.

If I have to go to the ER for anything, I think I am going to have Kitty's name on my lips. I had my quad bypass done in Oklahoma City at one of the best cardiac centers in the state. The care given was exactly what Kitty described. At that point in time I was just along for the ride. I was out of the hospital in a little over four days. A good hospital has a highly trained, professional staff that takes great care in providing the opportunity for the physical recovery. My hospital also provided services such as dietary counseling, physical therapy and support system for a host of lifestyle changes especially smoking cessation. I owe my life and the last 10 years to those fantastic caregivers and I seize every opportunity to sing their praises.
