I have always preferred English Literature over American; I find Shakespeare quite hilarious. However, Mark Twain keeps me reading American Literature, along with Ray Bradbury. My first upper division American Lit professor at UT was absolutely amazing, and made me even more satisfied with having English as one of my majors. Native American Literature also intrigues me because it allows me another connection to my heritage.

To begin with, it sounds to me that you're indeed referring to British literature vs. American literature. English literature would include both within it. Now in my opinion British literature definitely has its time and place. But my favorite would have to be American literature from the Victorian era. Then again I've been reading this era my whole life lol.

I can't decide. I like reading Shakespeare as well as novels and poems from eras like Romanticism, Jacobean and Victorian. High on my list of favorite books is almost anything by Jane Austen. I think they are equally good, just in different ways.

Mostly American, but I read whatever. I have a lot of stuff from Finland Im interested in, some is in English, and some in Finnish which takes me forever since I have to do it word for word and am still learning how the lanquage is structured.
I love Mark Twain, and a little later, Will Rogers. Both were a pain in the a** to the politicians of their day (and really, still to ours).
then again, I love Charles D*ckens. James A Michener is my favourite novelist.

Shakespeare was great to read. Edgar Allen Poe's poetry, although dark, sparked my interest. Deciphering him was a blast in College Composition class.
They weren't the only ones
Maya Angelou is still my biggest inspiration as well as Langston hughes
I've read books like "White Oleander"
and "Flowers In The Attic"
I love to read all genres ...
But what book changed a certain part of my life?
"1984" written by George Orwell
although many books I read, influence different to all aspects of my life.

Couple of weeks ago I read Wikie Collins, 'The Woman in White'. Now I'm on the last chapters of D*ckens 'Great Expectations'. These writers were friends, comrades, writing plays together and such. Wilkins died later with a laudanum - medical opium - addiction. Although D*ckens remains more popular, I am surprised that Collins book is superb with a great tale.

I seem to be alone in this (or, alone in my willingness to admit it), but I don't enjoy Shakespeare at all. I like Hemingway and Steinbeck, Jane Austen, Updike. It's a little outside the scope of the question, but I don't like most of the Russian greats--I do like Chekhov though.
