I have a box of rocks, that are:
-black,like graphite,
-mostly smooth,
-oval-shaped, some round, like a musket ball,
-size of a penny to 1/2 dollar,
-some with tiny, pin-hole pits (not deep),
-not heavy at all,
-non-magnetic.
Anyone help me?
I tried checking them online, haven't found them.
Thanks!

Are they glassy looking? They might be Cherokee tears, which are a type of volcanic glass. Other than that, the only thing that comes to mind is hematite, but that is more gunmetal grey and shiny. Can you take a picture of them?

You can either attach them to an email sent directly to someone's profile, or you have to upload pictures to photobucket and then get the HTML code once the pics are loaded onto photobucket. and then copy and paste that code onto a thread. There are help forums that do a much better of explaining how to do this than I can.

hello! I've taken pics of the rocks, and am still trying to find out how to put them on.
I've heard that the Apache tears can be polished, and be made into jewelry; sounds neat!
if I figure out how to post these pics for others to see, and if anyone wants to offer anything, I hope we could chat.
not an avid rock collector, I just picked up some interesting shaped rocks.
Thanks, everyone!

So sorry, my mistake, They are APACHE tears..Not Cherokee. I got mixed up...The story comes from an Apache legend when their warriors were fighting the US cavalry in the 1870's. Vastly outnumbered and facing defeat, the warriors rode off a mountain instead of being killed by the soldiers. The wives and families of the dead cried and their tears turned to stone when they hit the ground...The rocks are opaque looking until held up to light, where they can appear translucent.

Apache tears are another name for Obsidian. when thin enough you can nearly see through. are these rocks rough or smooth shiny on the inside? it is sounding to me like Obsidian. Where are you finding them? Or where did you get them from? That also will tell me more about them.

OP ~~ You may have some black shiny rocks until you find someone who can visually see your collection to make a definitive judgement.

I bought rock tumblers for my grandkids (10 & 8) for Christmas this year. Some rocks came with, and I bought 'refills'. Can anyone tell me.....what kind of rocks can they find on their own that would be good to use in the tumblers? Thanks!

I have an entire pile of rocks I have no idea what any of them are,but I have plans to carve n drill them.Nothing spectacular yet.Exept the fossilized tree root.It looks like a broken dinsour femur.Kinda a fun thing. And some purple rocks washed from a cave that are simply gorgous.

I WAS gonna tell you to find some agate.. but then noticed you are io Ohio.. and im not sure if agate is abundant there. I grew up in WI, but dont remember the kinds of rocks i used to collect. Any rocks that are hard are always interesting to tumble. You would be amazed at how different they come out! Just make sure they are not sandstone, and all about the same size, and any rocks look great tumbled!

I have some smaller than a penny, mostly round, a polished btoen color. Was told theyre apache tears. Ehen held to the light you can see the " grain " in them, like wood grain. Very pretty. I use them for inlay on walking sticks. Sadly i only have a handful left.
