When I was a very young girl ... I was in the 2nd grade, as I recall ... we lived across the street from a black family. The father was a professor at the local university. In that black household was a young boy who became a very good, life-long friend to my older brother and I. His nickname was "Boogernose".
We kids often gathered in the side lot at my house to play baseball.
One day Boogernose was up on the mound when his allergies kicked in and his nose started running. Boogernose dragged the cuff of his shirt across his face to sop up the snot before he threw the ball and in so doing he got snot on the ball.
I, of course, was up to bat and I determined to hit that ball as far out of the yard as I possibly could.
Just as the ball came streaking across the front corner of home plate our family dog darted into the space occupied by the arcing bat.
WHAP!!!!!!
Down goes the dog .. out cold!
Thinking that I had killed our beloved pet I took off running toward the furtherest reaches of the back yard and sought shelter behind the rhubarb.
From my secluded vantage point I observed the chaos surrounding the "I know it's dead" dog at home plate.
With tears gushing down my face and my nose beginning to run I swiped my own snot on my shirt cuff.
It was at this point when I realized that I was clutching the game ball in my white-knuckled, little fist.
