Nothing Gold Can Stay
by Robert Frost
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn begets the day. Nothing gold can stay.
-this is one of my favorites, especially in the context of relationships. i wonder what it means to other people.

It means nothing stays new. new birth or new discoveries are like gold, tiny, precious, reflective, a brilliant memory. But Newness leads to familiarity and growth just as sprouts turn into plants. Nothing stays new. most of us can relate to the concept of "the newness wears off" the emotional connection and value placed in something new. that's how I interpret it..

I don't know that I could say it better. But then, what? After the newness where's off and it's just familiarity, then what?

exactly... i am totally infatuated with that newness. for short periods of time, any relationship can be so exciting. then what... only those that mature beautifully will remain. some do... but i never lose interest for long in that shiny gold newness. so my long-term partners are accepting of my wandering. we cannot be the new but we can share the space to explore.
thanks for wakin up the thread, trav <3
