The Moosehead Lake Indians, also known as the Kineo Band of Maliseet Indians, is a group of Indians who have lived on Moosehead Lake since the 1800s. Their ancestors were Maliseet Indians and Abenaki Indians who settled there. The Moosehead Lake Indians is a tribe who doesn't have federal recognition. There are four Maine tribes who have federal recognition: the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Aroostook Band of Micmac Indians, the Penobscot Indians, and the Passmaquoddy Indians.
The Moosehead Lake Indians also deserve federal recognition. They are an Indian community that was founded by Chief Louis Annance, an Abenaki from Odanak, in the 1800s. The Moosehead Lake Indians have maintained a strong Native community on the lake for a long time and so deserve the benefits of federal recognition just like the other Maine tribes.
Do you think the Moosehead Lake Indians (Kineo Band of Maliseet Indians) deserve to receive federal recognition?

If the Moosehead Lake Indians gain federal recognition, this means they will finally have federal reservation lands. Right now, they have no reservation. This tribe and a tribe based out of Fort Kent don't have reservation lands unlike the other four Maine tribes.
It's an injustice when an Indian tribe doesn't have its own lands! This injustice needs to be corrected.
