Yes Ki-up is the expel of air from the abdomen area via the transmission of a strike, it has a threefold purpose it drives air out of the solar plexus region to prevent the condition of what they call "Having the wind knocked out of you", "Generates power by forcing neuro-muscular excitability, especially if the KI -up is audible such as in Karate", and an audible Ki-up causes surprise in an advesary. All systems have ki-ups whether it's the audible shouts in Karate, or the rhytmic expellation of air conditioned by the medicine ball in kickboxing & Thai training. In nei-gong and styles of Kung-Fu the Ki-up may be silent rhytmic breathing patterns coupled with certain movements or audible. In Kung-Fu chi or (ki) is generated through the belief of energy merdians in meditative breathing, its origins are both in Indian & tibetan yoga.

all well and good ... breath control ... from below the diaphragm forced past the diaphragm .... which means the best martial artists in the world would probably be opera singers ... smile
