I assume you do know that copies of live disc can be downloaded for most any flavor of Linux...

Just download...
Burn to disc...
Reboot to disc...

and you have a full blow working version of linux for you to test drive... =)

Links:
OpenSuse
Zorin OS
PCLinuxOS
****************

The links are to just a few, but you may download for free any distribution you choose... I would suggest downloading the live KDE desktop for any windows user...JMO

Zorin it probably the most like windows... as a matter fact it even has a desktop switcher to choose between XP, or Win7...

My personal preference would be that of Suse even for a new Linux user... however, Zorin is probably still a better choice...

As for the PCLinuxOS... I just like what they have done with it... but not something I would use for long... though I could if I had never see Suse... =)

Zorin Review

All the above. Usually there's also at least one running in emulation under something else

I'd grumble about no BSD option except MacOS & iOS technically qualify...

Win8 is not worth it, better stay with win7 and save $50 or so on a new computer.

I got a new computer last year around Christmas time, it came with windows 8. It works, but I am not a fan. I keep getting messages I can download 8.1 for free, too bad they didn't offer the same for windows 7, or even XP.

Even 8.1 needs custom software only to have xp style menus....Also my webcam doesn't work anymore! But my Vista was pure crap and I mostly use Ubuntu anyway.

I have Windows 8.1. I experimented for a while with Ubuntu 13.1 in a dual boot setup. But after switching to 2 SSD's, in raid 0, I can't get it to install. I also, couldn't find a wireless adapter that would work with Ubuntu 13.1 on another computer I had it on at the same time.

The first google finding:

My wireless card works perfectly out of the box without the hassle to install drivers.

Thanks for the information, but that is for installing Ubuntu 13.04 as a single operating system. It's been a while since I searched for a solution, I haven't tried to add Ubuntu 13.10 in dual boot since upgrading to Windows 8.1.

I have to agree, it been years since I've had to find any kind of driver for Linux... there might be some missing drivers, but they really have done a great job right out of the box!!!

Try, it surely is also for dual or multi boot. Before installing, I'd try the live demo from a cd or virtualbox etc. to check your wireless to be working.

OK. But I'm not sure I need to be concerned about the wireless working as I gave the PC with slow Ubuntu wireless to a friend. And the PC I want to add Ubuntu has an Ethernet connection.

Novell... OMG! it's been so long since I heard that word... I'm actually a CNE for 3.12... what version are they up to now???

hmmm... if your using Novell I'm surprised you went with CentOS and not Suse... Suse being a Novell product...

I work for a school district. Came in last year and am cleaning things up. We're going to go Microsoft AD and have been removing all Novell stuff including OES to avoid paying Novell $$$. I'm/was CNE for 5/6 but moved to the dark side.

As a gamer, my only realistic option is Windows. Not much for consoles. WINE doesn't work 110%, so I don't bother.

Burned out on Linux when taking Computer Science at the U of Arkansas in Fayetteville, AR. Package Updates are apparently not meant to be done in large batches, resulting in too many no-boot scenarios.

Steam will change this situation.-
I run Wolfenstein and Rage perfectly with Wine 1.6 on Ubuntu. Also Doom3BFG and Mame (donkey kong, invaders, pacman, burgertime etc. are huge fun as I remember playing them 30y ago)
Mainly I use X-Plane for developing addons.

If I have to choose between 'Open Source' and 'works every time', I choose 'works every time'. Maybe SteamOS will change the game, but I'm not holding my breath.
