Truth of the matter you "poor Widows" were at the mercy of both sides scouring the countryside to feed their troops & horses, mules , etc; my Grandpa on Mom's side of family was a Forager= confiscated supplies from locals by force or payment ( near worthless script )while serving with the 10th Tenn, mounted Infantry,...they rode to the battle , butfought on foot.

Not a "Real" Tradition but.=for me, since I have No family---I do Velveeta grits Casserole, fried eggs over easy, Pepperage Farm thin sliced toast smothered with "Real butter" sometimes creamed Chip Beef, Tomato juice for breakfast, maybe a Banana, & coffee.
i'm cooking My usual tonight, Roast Beef, tators, carotts,& Mushroons. yep coffee too.
finish off with some nice Buttered Pecan Ice Cream for dessert with chocolate Hard shell on top.

Ante , script , is money printed mainly for occupation forces to re-emburse or purchase goods or services rendered in areas or foreign countries , our government past & present as well as other nations do not like our real currency to be in hands of foreigners , ( this is what used to be ) when i was in the service, now they recive cash by the truck load, green backs we use here, these are exchanged for silver &gold & weapons ,then to top it off they print conterfit, bills . & distribute back here. the military script doesn't look like our dollars at all.

Sadie,the script is worthless in any place other than the theater of operations it was issued in , such as Korea , the American green backs that we use here despite it's loss of buying power here ...is still much in demand in foreign lands where they use it to buy gold , silver & guns ,drugs etc, .... now is this clear?

True ...Thespian , like i said , for example the the script issued in the coal mining communities , would be worthless in some other area than the stores & other businesses who agreed to accept them as payment for goods & services.

Most all little coal mining towns had a company store. It was owned by the coal companies. If a coal miner earned $50.00 a week, he was issued $50.00 worth of script. He could redeem it in $50.00 worth of merchandise at the company store or any merchant that accepted it. Script was round metal tokens made just like nickles, dimes and quarters but slightly different. They had different values. The coal companies also owned a bunch of houses called company houses. A miner could rent them if he needed a place to live. I was raised on a farm about 6 miles from a coal mining town. Back in the early to mid 50's, everything was booming.

I'm sure most of you by now have heard the expression "He's a real go getter" ... in the days of of a bygone era ,of shirt factories, thread mills , canneries , the hubbys or boy friends made it a point to be on hand come payday when the little woman & some times even her children got paid , he'd go get her & the pay envelope too. most especially the boozers , gamblers & wh*re mongers.

I fix a dish with cabbage that's very tasty - usually make it in a wok. Slice some potatoes (I usually leave the peelings on) and onions and cook in a little grease - I usually use olive oil. When the potatoes and onions are brown and tender, I add a couple of Nathan's hot dogs cut up (the recipe called for sausages, but I don't always have those on hand). Cook that for a few minutes, then add shredded cabbage, a few tablespoons of water, cover and steam until the cabbage is tender. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Simple, quick, and very good!

Anti, I first came over here when I was 21 .. Went to Texas close to a base as hubb was military, they paid him in script.......That left me trying to learn our Amercian money and the blasted Script *L -- Memories..

Alex , yer cabbage dinner & Altjes sound mighty good , can smell the fond aroma way over here in S.W. Mo. for me i'd like stuffed cabbage , with gound lamb & rice as the filler ,cresent rolls & whole cranberry sauce,iced tea , for desert sweet kisses from Dianne.

There were several Hungarian families that settled the coal mining town about five mile from me and every fall, the church they attend makes and sell cabbage rolls. They made an exhibition mine out of an old mine and you can take tours thru it from about April thru October.

.....Means to back out and not live up to your end of the agreement. I read somewhere that some think it come about years ago when King Edward of England refused to honor a treaty. Some of the Welsh people think it is an insult to them.

How many of you remember the huge highway poster signs that advertised products like Tobacco, cars , soft drinks & beer? did you ever get up real close to view the printed panels that were posted on these sign boards ?I may have said this before ? anyhow each & every thing in the picture displayed was made up of small , circles , dots , diamonds ,Xs , + , #,* & several other marks in different colors , to make that image , there might be in a single finger of a smoker several hundered such marks,all combined that to a viewer from several feet away look like a print of a painting.one of several displaying Santa Claus, used by the Coca -Cola company for example .were very colorful.

My grandma taught us to never get rid of a purse without LEAVING at least a penny in it for the next person.
You also did not give an empty purse or wallet as a gift!
When MY KIDS were married they were invited to come home for Christmas dinner UNTIL their first kid arrived, then I abolished that "tradition" and insisted they MAKE THEIR OWN TRADITIONS, make holiday plans that did not include eating Christmas dinner at grandma and Grandpa's house every holiday or else it will "not seem like Christmas" to the Grandkids after we pass, and be hard to START new "traditions" when they are 12, 14 or whatever.
I'd rather they just come over for dinner on non-special occasions.

No,My parents were born in the good old u.s.a.and i was born right here in latrobe.grandparents came from scotland and ireland and germany.Can remember my grandmother making saurkraut and dumplings.She was german.
