... but if you are saying you have tried to make a start several times ad it is a "no-go" are you implying that there is a low boredom threshold?

Morlock ~~ I have never lived in a Suburban but I can see how trying to read a boring novel may drain one's battery.

okay, my take -
I have read nearly 200 pages CC and have enjoyed it very much. It is the tale of a woman and her two male friends, one becoming her husband, the other the husband's best friend and object of the woman's unresolved sexual fantasies. Franzen presents an excellent story with great human insights of suppressed college basketball star Patty and how she met Walter, later marrying him, and his best friend, a punk guitar band leader Richard. Walter is very nice, Patty is hidden and forward at the same time, Richard is the wounded artist who does not want to hurt his best friend Walter but who under Patty's libido, must. It's about Patty's thing with her two kids. She is the suburban stay-at-home mom who doted on the son who later rebels in real and nasty ways from her. And she was never able to get consistently close to her daughter. So Patty is left out in the fog. I don't know if I am finally bored with the book. I would like to finish it as Franzen offers lots of human insights. But the lives portrayed differ from the hunger pains of familiar reality. Like have you had a homeless family sleep on the floor of your tech center because they were newly evicted again, hungry and none of you had money? The family would then have a different appreciation of a college degree. Nothing is taken for granted. And their miracles are for real and out of this world. I will try to finish the book.
