1. Yes, I'm a Woman Veteran. I am aware of all the services a available |
2. Yes, I'm a woman veteran and I have not been informed |
3. No I am not a Veteran, but my mom is and she is using services |
4. No I am not a Veteran. But I volunteer at my local VA |
5. Other connection with Women Veterans |
Well, first of all I'd like to thank the Vietnam Veterans who have made these services available way back before I enlisted. Now, I'm one of 10% at the VA and "program specialists" think I am a spokesperson for women because I am the only one they see. Where can I place fliers for women to come in for services? Will the people VFW let me walk in since I wasn't in a Foreign War? just curious how the program specialist expects me to know who to ask (?) any organizers out there(?) thank you for your responses. Also, feel free to add some stories.

Couple of informal (Free) networks to find specific populations of women would be through
1) Mainstream Media; submitting well written "fill" copy (Who, what, when, where, why, person to contact for more info) to women's features section also the sports writers since something I have seen in populations of women veterans is they like sports, and follow up with Thank You's if you get published. It is amazing what will show up in print on a slow news day. Include pictures with signed consent to reprint.
2) The pulpit. You can save a lot of steps and cover more denominations by addressing the Interfaith council in your community. Go prepared with hand outs in three fold format so they can be displayed in the sanctuary of the various churches.
3) Your county Mental health offices. If you can address their counseling staff in and in-service training in a 15 minute presentation ; actually 7 minutes with 7 minutes for questions and take handouts they can not tell you who their patients are but they will know which ones are vets and they do make referrals to services. You must be easy to contact. Have a phone message machine you check daily.
4) Post in the Homeless shelters. The common concept is that men veterans are homeless but and significant number of women who are homeless or living in board and care are actually veterans.
5) Newsletter publications for Manufactured Home communities and larger apartment complexes usually have monthly newsletters; especially senior communities and they are looking for copy. Most of these are printed locally if you don't know who publishes them talk to your local printers for suggestions.
6) Not sure how to access them but one person who knows a lot about the people in their community is the Mailman. Especially true of elderly and disabled people the contact with the mail man may be the only person a person knows and sees nearly daily and trusts. If you can get info to them they can often informally chat about stuff.
7) This is not a shot against Female Vets but one thing many of them have in common is contact with law enforcement. Directly or through significant others. Contacting Police Department, Probation and Parole, even Halfway house programs will turn up some. I worked in a women's penitentiary early in my career in Human services and I actually had inmates purposely "flunk" reviews to serve all their time rather than go through "homelessness or go back home. Sometimes jail is the lesser evil. I had a few tell me that incarceration what not the different than living in the barracks.
8) Public Library system; especially the Bookmobile staff will know which of their patrons are veterans.
9) Kids know things. Asking kids to tell a Grandmother, Mother, Aunt, Niece about a special contest where they can recognize a loved one who has served or earn a small scholarship by writing and essay will bring a lot of Vets forward.
10) Last but not least keep in mind that English is not always the first language in the Female Veteran's home. Putting information out in multiple languages, in their media, will bring in a significant number of people.
Good luck....

We have a va clinic here, but it sucks. The nearest hospital is 3 hours away and they want me to go there for physical therapy 3 days a week. No way.
I have a great civilian doc so that's who I see right in town. I'm lucky enough to have a great job with good insurance so I don't have to use the va.

Thanks all for responding.
@ cup: have you been to receive services?
I went to get services and the lady volunteer told me to let Women Vets know there are services available. That, my dear cup, makes me responsible for getting the word out.
According to the poll. Women would rather use their own private insurance doctors rather than drive out to VA clinics or offices for services. I, personally, like the VA and the services available:
Aquatics Therapy
Breathing, relaxation, mindfulness
Non-yoga
Stretching
Weight room
Gym
Basketball courts
Tennis courts
Track and field
Golf
Gardening
Clothing vouchers
Ping pong tournaments
Pool tournaments
And more at the West Los Angeles VA, but who wants to drive the 405?

OP has not led anyone astray, she is acting as an unofficial rep. for Women Veterans that are unaware of the services available to them. More power to her for getting the word out. Thanks for having the courage to post this OP. I'm a V.A. whistleblower recently seen on C.N.N.

Women vets should not be treated any differently than their male counterparts. If that is happening (and it is) its just WRONG. Right now women fill 17% of the slots in all branches and nearly 20% of all active duty MOS's in the Navy and Army according to DOD.

You all need to get a grip ..... what the OP is doing is posting a thread in the military forum just like any other DH member can do.
If the OP was a designated spokesperson for female vets then she would be working for the Veteran's Administration or an online veteran's website, not posting a "do nothing" thread on a dating site.
How gullible do you think people really are? If you want a 20 minute breather fromyour hectic life I can refer you to an elevator.

The OP said she was the UNOFFICIAL spokes person and stated why. Freshen up on your reading comprehension skills Cupo instead of poking with a stick. She ALSO is a Veteran so show the respect that entails. You spend more time trying to be clever (I use that term very loosely) and domineering. Who in the hell are you to talk about "do nothing" threads? That pretty much describes most of yours. Good lord woman!! Go take a look at them! Talk about a waste of space.

ok jr thanks for checking out my thread. Going back to thanking everyone for keeping my forum post going. Yes, people at the VA know the services are a available, but maybe, just maybe ONE woman might need clothing for a job interview. She would have to be low income. Maybe she is on here at the library and notices my post. Then, when she goes to the VA for her doctor appointment, she could also schedule an appointment with her Social Worker to get the voucher for free clothing. She gets the job and is no longer low-income.
Thanks again

Never saw anyone give you an answer on this one, so here you go :
The VFW is only open to those that have served in combat overseas. Service during wartime, or overseas during peace generally do not qualify.
There is the American Legion however, which is almost as well known, which is open to all service members that were honorably discharged. (Perhaps even all except dishonorable, I'm not certain on this point.)
There are also many other regional and local organizations as well. Search online, ask the VA for information (they're more than just veterans' health).
Or, falling all that, just try asking any old timer flying a flag. If they aren't a locally connected vet, they probably know who is.

. Thank you for letting me know. I was thinking the American Legion but not sure. And yes the WWII men think that I'm not supposed to wear fatigues, I guess I won't deal with them.
I'll let you know what happens.
I have more info to post but my thread sez I'm bumping up my popularity. LOL. And again. There was another job Fair at the Sepulveda VA. Who knew? They said the only ones who showed up were service connected.

You're welcome!
There is a women's conference on Saturday October 25th. Check in 10:00 am. Starts at 11:00 am. WEST LOS ANGELES VETERANS HEALTH CENTER OFF THE 405 near Santa Monica. I don't know if you need identification to get in the building. There is a sign-in sheet at the front door. If you have your VA health card no waiting at the front door. Just flash your VA identification card. I hope this helps. If I knew the link I'd paste it. HAVE FUN. Please give us a report. Thank you!
