Years ago, my x and I used to cruise the Chickahominy. A beautiful place for swimming, water skiing, ..then I heard it had dangerous snakes.

I like going down Northwest River but it has moccasins and other snakes. The snakes don't stop me. The cost of renting something to go down it is what stops me

I'm not a beach person per se, but I do enjoy places like Kilmarnock up in the Northern Neck for it's solitude, or somewhere like Buggs Island/John H. Kerr Lake down on the NC boarder if you're looking for something more than sunbathing. As far as snakes go, unfortunately, water moccasins have a nasty habit of being inquisitive and are actually attracted to the noise of someone splashing/swimming around in the water. You're visiting their environment, so you gotta keep your eyes peeled to their presence. Hope that helps.

The water in the bay here had to be 'shocked' 2 times this year for making swimmers sick from the bacteria build up.
I was one of those people. Didn't phase the kids, but took me out for about 3 days
