I prefer unconventional engagement rings.

If ever I get engaged, I would love a black onyx ring with the band surrounded by garnets. Not sure on the cut of the onyx.

Vise versa would work just as well.

Did you know, that in ancient times, the diamond was considered bad luck and was never put on engagement rings. The diamond was added when the tradition was pick up by, I think the Europeans and the higher society started using diamonds.

I prefer the old tradition.

Sounds like a nice idea but I think it's better to consider the woman when choosing a ring and not the giver. She is the one who has to wear the ring, not you. That's why I think it would be a better idea to wait till you have someone and learn what styles they like such as band style, traditional vs. modern, big or small, round or square, etc. When helping my brother pick out the ring for his wife we really put a lot of thought into her own personal style and what she would want.
