Hey I am a single who has a child that is considered as special needs. he was born with pierre robin syndrome, immune deficiency, and a deleted chromosome. my parents help me while i work full time and get my health back on track so we live with them. I'm scared to get close to anyone that might cause. more stress to my son. and want someone to understand that my sons health is more important to me than anyone. that it would take time before i consider introducing. especially with surgeries coming up.

this discussion is for stories to be shared of the nicu or tips on dating with you have a child who is special.

It's truly hard to relate to people with healthy kids.

My son has autism, so I tell that person upfront who I'm dating but most seem understanding and I understand your situation, so u need someone who is on the same page as u someone strong minded, and good luck to u and your son yes you're right about taking your time since he has to get surgery so focus on that

Yea. i talk with a friend i met at duke hospital after he was born. its hard to talk to people because its like it kills the mood. we both learned to just smile with it so it doesn't sound so horrific while at the same time are well aware of what's going on. it kills the moments. I've had guys be like so when am i meet your boy. i just look at them and say ha um it'd be awhile.

how old is your child?

I have 14 year old twins. My son has autism with underlying hyperactivity and fine motor skills/speech snd language delays and sensory issues and functions at a 3rd grade level. His twin sister has severe bipolar/adhd/emotional disturbance/convergence disorder, and issues with her eye sight and hearing. The simple issue of telling people I have kids is hard enough but when I tell them they have disorders snd disabilities and that I'm unable to work in order to see after them and live at home with my mom because their father is ashamed of his kids and abandoned us people quickly turn tail and run. I let whoever I'm talking to know that my kids take a lot of my time and they come first. Alot of the time they think I'm a gold digger looking for someone to leach off of or that I'm looking for a replacement dad for them. I don't get to get out other than appointments meetings and grocery shopping and I don't have any friends. The friends I did have got married had normal children ND can't seem to understand the struggle of raising one disabled child let a lone two. My other friends are either still single or moved away so I have no one really to talk to or confide in. I'm just looking for someone to hang out with and have fun but not a lot of guys give me a chance wether it's friendship leading to more or just fwb. It's a hard life alone.I cry myself to sleep most every night and pray for someone. Unfortunately those of us single parents with disabled children stay just that single parents with disabled children. It's like I'm ignored and left out. It would be nice if people were more understanding. Then maybe I'd be able to meet some one. Maybe we all would. It gets depressing and lonely. Sometimes I wanna give up but I keep going cause I know my kids need me. I'm close to giving up on ever finding anyone.
