If this had been a regular Joe Shmoe they'd get jail time and a big fat fine for being stupid. This cop gets two weeks off work, unpaid, and loses some vacation time,,,Really?

MEDINA, Ohio (AP) — A police dog in northeast Ohio died from heatstroke after being left in a police cruiser for more than four hours last month, officials said.

The Montville Township police department K-9, Beny, died on Sept. 28 after Sgt. Brett Harrison left the dog in a cruiser in the station parking lot from about 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to a statement from police Tuesday. The cruiser was off and the windows were closed.

An administrative investigation concluded Harrison violated policy and procedures. He received a two-week unpaid suspension and lost 40 hours of vacation.

Police Chief Terry Grice told The Medina Gazette (http://bit.ly/1scc3Ju) the dog's death was an accident and security camera video showed Harrison panicking after he realized what had happened.

Harrison issued a statement Tuesday night expressing his "deepest apology" to Montville Township and to his "partner, friend and loving family member Beny."

The police department referred the case to the Medina County Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for review. The nonprofit group will conduct an investigation that could ultimately lead to criminal charges.

Beny, a two-year-old German shepherd, joined the Montville Township police department near Medina about a year ago.

Harrison was hired with the department in 2007. Grice said in a statement that Harrison cared deeply about Beny and is overwhelmed with grief.

That makes 4 since the 1st of August. That's totally uncalled for.

Looks like that would be a charge of negligent homicide of a public officer as K9s are considered officers too. And yes...if it was one of us...we would be thrown In jail off top.

Oh, yeah, he was charged

He was found to have violated policy and procedures. He received a two-week unpaid suspension and a loss of 40 hours of vacation,

So basically he got a 2 week unpaid vacation, and a loss of less than two days paid vacation.

I'm sorry, but that doesn't seem good enough. He killed an officer of the law- it doesn't matter that it was a dog. It was still a living breathing creature, and it was trained to do his job, and do it well, which includes having his handler's "back".

The training of these dogs is intense and it is expensive. If I were running a K-9 training facility, I would not readily allow this PD have another dog. I would really have stiff rules and regulations to protect these dogs.

I thought they were doing more. If I shot a police dog at least in Kansas it is same as if I kill a police officer or at least close. I thought he was getting jail time. The quick report I saw a few days ago led me to that assumption.

I looked it up again, and the part I put in bold was from the report. I just omitted his name. It's sad, I'm telling you. A civilian would have gotten 20 years or so in prison for harming the dog, yet his handler killed him. The dog should have been in the station with him.

Here's a neat website that honors all the police dogs who've died in the line of duty.

Now, back to tending my own pack. I love my babies.
