I've always wanted to own a large cat but obviously I would only do so if I had the land and $ for upkeep. So.....

What are your thoughts about exotic pets? Would you ever own one? Is it immoral to confine it? Would you rather let it room free in the wild?

I think they are best left in the wild where they belong

I don't agree with that at all. I have a pet deer and he is a wonderful very smart pet he was neutered at 9 weeks and will never have horns or have that wild instinct. I rescued him when he was just born, his mother was hit and killed by a car.

Just because you had him neutered and have raised him doesn't mean he won't have that wild instinct. He's still a wild animal. I know people who've raised raccoons and other wild animals from babies and they eventually get too hard to handle. Although a deer is cute you can't bet on it being a pet forever.

Would you care to put your money where your mouth is? Since he was neutered at 9 weeks old he will never have a adult mentality.

Not to argue, but are you sure? I know veterinarians often will neuter dogs and cats fairly young- but not sure about it affecting mentality.

How about growth? Did neutering him so young affect his size in any way?

You said he wouldn't have antlers, so did you have his antler buds cauterized, so they wouldn't grow, like farmers have calves done? I'm just wondering and asking.
I assist my veterinarian with my animals when they have procedures done, mostly, I just watch and ask questions, but my vet likes that, because the pet subconsciously knows that you are there and stays calm. So, you have my curiosity peaked.

As I said in my reply to the email you sent me, when I googled it it said it's illegal to have a wild animal as a pet in your state anyway. Yes, they're cute but I don't care the reason. Once a human has a wild animal they can't be put back in the wild.

By the way, neutering doesn't keep them from "adult mentality." It might reduce agression but doesn't mean it's gone 100%.

It's illegal here as well. Unless you get them from someone authorized to have and raise them, and they are born in captivity. To pick one up, even if the parent animal is killed is cause for arrest, a fine, and possible jail time. You are supposed to call the Game officials, so they can be rehabilitated. JMHO

I'm still curious about the questions I asked earlier though.

I feel it's ok as long as it's a species that can thrive in captivity if the person interested has the means to provide proper care and husbandry.

But I keep big snakes so I'm more than just a little biased

Again, it is wrong to own a free spirit and I believe exotic animals should remain in the wild.

There are so many domestic animals that need loving homes and crave human companionship, why take in an exotic one?

It's not illegal in NY but its a long and expensive process I personally have a few exotics (snakes) I have inspections every half year by the state regulators I've owned exotics for 7 years and I don't regret it. I respect each animal I have I know they are dangerous there are safety precautions to be taken and I adhere to them

If you take care of it properly and its impossible for it to return to the wild then I'm all for it but if it can survive in the wild where it's meant to be then it should be there

What if you use the animal to potentially help other humans (I provide anti venom to multiple hospitals) yes my snakes can all survive in the wild but their capture helps many people.

I wouldn't want to risk the animal's safety. So, I'll leave it in the wild. They belong in the wild not kept in captivity.

non of the animals I've ever owned were ever put in harms way. I follow all proper safety procedures and regulations, for the venom I "milk" the snakes once a month so their not stressed unlike some people who "milk" their snakes 3/4/5 times a month. They are all well fed with large enough habitats and proper temps and humidity. I'm not askin because I'm new to this just wanted to know where people stand.

I believe in BigRichs case where it is a service. No problem. But to have a exotic animal just for a pet is wrong. Wild animals or just that" a WILD animal. If they were meant to be pets they would have evolved by now to be domesticated. Wild animals are me any to be in the wild. To expect them to be a pet. Is a selfish, cruel, stupid, and dangerous action.
