If you have to go away on business or if it's a vacation your planning, who cares for your pets? I am a Pet Sitter who stays at clients home with pets while the people are gone. Love this work. Many people don't want a stranger in the home. Any opinions?

No offense, but in all seriousness, no- I would not hire a pet sitter. I don't feel anyone can or will care for my pets like I do. Besides, two of my pack are elderly (just weeks from being 15) and need special care, so I wouldn't leave them with anyone.

I let my parents keep my Border collie...they Love him plus he knows them & been over to their house loads of times so its his 2nd home kinda. As for my cat she's fine with self feeder & Big bowl of water inside with radio on low.

I wouldn't mind if a friend/family member house sat for me but as for hiring someone it wouldn't work...my Border collie does Not make friends easily with a stranger. So it just wouldn't work for me. But good luck to ya tho

Dances, that's what I would do, if my parents were still living, and I needed a pet sitter. My Dad would have really loved my Husky and my son's Boxer. Mom loved my Australian Shepherd, and my Yorkie, and the Yorkie-Poo was actually her dog, that I took in when she passed away. Mom would have also loved my newest rescue dog- my Mini Aussie. She's small and sweet.

We either leave our dog at my grandma's house or at Bark N Purr Retreat. It cost $25 dollars a day per pet. The dogs are kept in roomy cages and are let out in a big fenced in yard. They are feed, well taken care of, and loved while the owner is gone.

My dog usually goes were I go. The rare times I have had to leave her, she was left with family. She is such a cry baby when I leave it is hard to leave her. So when I go on vacation she goes, except when I went to Alaska. I am leery of boardering her anywhere. And not to fond of strangers in my house. So I guess I would have to say no to a Pet Sitter.

Dang maybe that is why I don't get many dates..

I have had a pet sitter for my cat every year I have summered in Alaska, over ten years now, some good some set up drug labs in my home while I was gone! My cat died three months ago and I still have the sitter here I really doubt I will get another cat as the eagles in Alaska will carry them off and I have not had the best luck with sitters

Yes! It really depends on your pet.
I have had a sitter in the past. She was someone I had known for years & trusted. She had farm experience & she would let my dogs out, feed them, change their water, etc. Then she would check on the other 38 pets that were the farmy ones.
Now that my older dog is deaf & has episodes of dimentia, I don't think I would trust anyone but me. (knock on wood that nothing happens to me & that I'm not forced to make this decission)
If you have to travel for work, you don't have much of a choice. I would suggest you get someone to come to your home if possible. It's less stressful on the pet. If you need to find a facility outside your home, research, research, research!!! Stop in at the place when they don't expect you. Ask every question you can think of.
As far as bringing a pet along, I'm all for it if you're driving. There is NO WAY I would put my dogs on a plane in a cargo area. I found an airline that only transports animals. They are not put in a cargo area & a vet travels with them.
It's a hard decission. Good luck!!!

Yes but not until she gets her income tax refund and pays all the back rent and money she "borrowed" from my hidden emergency fund

The only people who have domestic animals that I interview with, show they really care about their pets, nice to see. I am very respectful, bring my own food, clean up after myself, and do my best to keep the pets from missing human mom, dad, or both. Have not cared for any yet that I didn't hit it off with after a day or so. I give references from other people who hired me, my email, facebook, federal and state background check and ask what else if anything would they want to see or know. Personally I don't know if I would ever trust someone again after a co-worker was paid to come in 2 x a day to care for my 2 cats now passed on. The place was a mess, no water in bowl, boxes overloaded and not with litter! So I see people being apprehensive with a stranger. I am not a stranger when they have me back. I can see why some wouldn't hire though. Thanks for your replies

no,because my pack would not see you as someone who was supposed to be there, and you would become a liability as soon as you tried to walk into their house/yard...

and, that is what they are supposed to do!

For the ones who thinks they are or can be the only one to care for their pets,
what if you become ill or had and accident? Wouldn't it be wiser to socialize them or at least had a backup plan?
Yes, you may be the only one who loves your pet in that special way but, that doesn't me someone else can't love and care for your pet.

I would hire a pet sitter with good references from my veterinarian and background check. I have had to leave my cat home when watching my sister's children in another state. Her husband had cancer. I left my cats with my parents and called daily to make sure things were going well.

Just because I would NEVER hire a pet sitter to come into my home does not mean that my pets are not socialized. My dogs are well trained and socialized. But socialization is for when they are out in public. Our homes are THEIR DEN, and it is their instinct to protect their own den. Why confuse them?

Also, just because I won't hire a pet sitter does not mean that I do not have an emergency plan in place for my pets' care should something happen to me, because I do and have always had a plan in place for such situations. I have someone who KNOWS the elderly dogs health issues (both have bad hearts and one has seizures), and knows how I care for each of my fur babies and will care for them accordingly.
I just refuse to allow a stranger to come into my home while I am not here, and be "chummy" with my pets. If that offends anyone, then so be it. They are MY PETS.

I also noticed and didn't like something that the OP said. She said she "brought her own food" to feed people's pets. That's a major NO-NO, because if she would feed your pet a food it is not used to, you will have a sick dog and/or cat. It could even cause the pet's death.

No one, but no one, but NO ONE feeds any of my pets food or treats that are NOT approved by me! Too many are dying from being fed bad or tainted food.

But barring extenuating circumstances- this still applies-

I have my mom, sister or nephew if I had to leave my cat. Since my cat is an indoor cat, she needs someone to stay here several hours every day or stay at someone else's house. She is 13yrs. old, and a bit needy for attention. She would be terribly lonely if she were alone all day.
When I cat cared for cats, as a teen, I stayed for at least a couple hours every day and pop in throughout the day. I would feed, play, wash and clean cat dishes and litter then sit and watch TV with the cat on my lap. Worked out great because back then we didn't have cable, lol.

My son is currently watching "smart cat" &"dumb cat". They are 20 years old and only prefer him as their cat-sitter. I would hire someone to watch his Labrador; hey, wait a minute......
