VA Secretary Robert McDonald admits lying about Special Forces service
Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald has admitted that he lied about serving in the special operations forces in a conversation with a homeless veteran that was caught on camera earlier this year.
McDonald made the claim in January while he was in Los Angeles as part of the VA's effort to locate and house homeless veterans. During the tour, a homeless man told McDonald that he had served in the special operations forces.
"Special forces? What years?" McDonald responded. "I was in special forces." The exchange was broadcast on "The CBS Evening News" Jan. 30. McDonald's misstatement was first reported by The Huffington Post.
McDonald graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1975 and completed Army Ranger training before being assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division until his retirement in 1980. According to the Huffington Post, while McDonald was formally recognized as a graduate of Ranger School, he never actually served in a Ranger battalion or other special operations unit.
"I have no excuse," the website quoted McDonald as saying in its report. "I was not in special forces."

i never tell lies. i do embellish some. walked up to a lady in a bar last night and said, "scuze me mam but i was sitting at that bar stool a while back and now can't seem to find my congressional medal of honor, mind if i sneak a look under there?"

If He Graduated "Ranger school" IE "Special Forces Training" at that time, Does that not mean he was special forces but not assigned to a "Combat" role? He did not say he was in combat!!
Civilians (Draft Dodgers)splitting hairs to denigrate someone who served......Just to make themselves feel great about avoiding serving their country!!

Ranger school is not "Special Forces". And even if he was in the Ranger regiment, which he was not, they were not part of SOCOM (special operations command) when he was in the Army. And nobody who has ever gone through Ranger school would accidentally "misstate" that they were "in Special Forces".

Lots of soldiers graduate from Ranger School without ever serving in a Ranger Brigade. They get the tab. During Vietnam we had guys assigned to designated Ranger units (One company in every infantry division) that weren't all Rangers.They wore a "scroll", not a tab, during their assignment to those units but were not Rangers.When they left the unit they could no longer wear the scroll. I don't know how anyone could claim to be "Special Forces" and not have earned that honor. Pretty stupid for someone in his position to make that up knowing it was pure BS.Lots of units work alongside and with Special Forces, but that doesn't make them Special Forces....

from what i've seen he regrets saying it, has no excuse. issue over, other than for those with no regrets and plenty of excuses that is.

He wanted to "connect with a homeless vet" that he was counseling. So he lied?
Isn't that demeaning all homeless vets? Perhaps how all vets are being treated?
His apology is accepted but wouldn't the truth have been the first order of business?

He flat out lied.No one took any thing a way from him.Brain Williams got sent up the river for 6 months.No pay no its OK . This so called vet will walk away get his pension and he won't care about anyone.

They are all liars. He can steal a little valor, but when he lies about the great job he's doing, it gets me pissed off.
