Rep. Lamar Smith (R., Texas), chair of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, released a wide-ranging report on Tuesday that shows how senior Obama administration officials retaliated against a leading scientist and plotted ways to block a congressional inquiry surrounding key research into the impact of radiation. A top DoE scientist who liaised with Congress on the matter was fired by the Obama administration for being too forthright with lawmakers, according to the report, which provides an in-depth look at the White House’s efforts to ensure senior staffers toe the administration’s line. The report also provides evidence that the Obama administration worked to kill legislation in order to ensure that it could receive full funding for its own hotly contested climate change agenda. The report additionally discovered efforts by the Obama administration to censor the information given to Congress, interfering with the body’s ability to perform critical oversight work. “Instead of providing the type of scientific information needed by Congress to legislate effectively, senior departmental officials sought to hide information, lobbied against legislation, and retaliated against a scientist for being forthcoming,” Smith said in a statement. “In this staff report based on lengthy record before the committee, much has been revealed about how senior level agency officials under the Obama administration retaliated against a scientist who did not follow the party line.” “Moving forward, the department needs to overhaul its management practices to ensure that Congress is provided the information it requires to legislate and that federal employees and scientists who provide that information do so without fear of retribution,” Smith said. The report goes into Congress’ efforts to regulate the Low Dose Radiation Research Program, or LDRRP, which sought to test the impact of radiation on human beings. The program, started in the 1990s, was meant to support research into waste cleanup and the impact of nuclear weapons. In mid-2014, lawmakers introduced legislation, the Low Dose Radiation Act of 2014, to help regulate the program and minimize harmful side effects. During an October 2014 briefing with senior DoE staff on the matter, lawmakers heard testimony from Dr. Noelle Metting, the radiation research program’s manager. Less than a month later, lawmakers discovered that Obama administration officials had “removed Dr. Metting from federal service for allegedly providing too much information in response to questions posed by” Congress during the briefing, the report states. Congressional investigators later determined that the administration’s “actions to remove Dr. Metting were, in part, retaliation against Dr. Metting because she refused to conform to the predetermined remarks and talking points designed by Management to undermine the advancement of” the 2014 radiation act. Emails unearthed during the investigation “show a sequence of events leading to a premeditated scheme by senior DoE employees ‘to squash the prospects of Senate support'” for the radiation act, a move that lawmakers claim was meant to help advance President Obama’s own climate change goals. “The committee has learned that one of DoE’s stated purposes for Dr. Metting’s removal from federal service was her failure to confine the discussion at the briefing to pre-approved talking points,” according to the report. “The committee has also established that DoE management … failed to exercise even a minimal standard of care to avoid chilling other agency scientists as a result of the retaliation against Dr. Metting for her refusal to censor information from Congress.” The investigation concluded that “DoE placed its own priorities to further the president’s Climate Action Plan before its constitutional obligations to be candid with Congress,” the report states. “The DoE’s actions constitute a reckless and calculated attack on the legislative process itself, which undermines the power of Congress to legislate. The committee further concludes that DoE’s disregard for separation of powers is not limited to a small group of employees, but rather is an institutional problem that must be corrected by overhauling its management practices with respect to its relationship with the Congress.” These moves by the administration were part of an effort to secure full funding for the president’s climate change agenda, the report claims. “Instead of working to understand the value of the LDRRP for emergency situations, DoE Management engaged in a campaign to terminate research programs that could divert funds from the president’s Climate Action Plan,” the report states. Congress is recommending a full overhaul of the DoE’s management structure in order to ensure this type of situation does not occur again.

One professor's database cites 81 attempts by the United States to influence elections in other countries, notably in Iran, Guatemala and Chile. The CIA has accused Russia of interfering in the 2016 presidential election by hacking into Democratic and Republican computer networks and selectively releasing emails. But critics might point out the U.S. has done similar things. The U.S. has a long history of attempting to influence presidential elections in other countries – it’s done so as many as 81 times between 1946 and 2000, according to a database amassed by political scientist Dov Levin of Carnegie Mellon University. That number doesn’t include military coups and regime change efforts following the election of candidates the U.S. didn’t like, notably those in Iran, Guatemala and Chile. Nor does it include general assistance with the electoral process, such as election monitoring. Levin defines intervention as “a costly act which is designed to determine the election results [in favor of] one of the two sides.” These acts, carried out in secret two-thirds of the time, include funding the election campaigns of specific parties, disseminating misinformation or propaganda, training locals of only one side in various campaigning or get-out-the-vote techniques, helping one side design their campaign materials, making public pronouncements or threats in favor of or against a candidate, and providing or withdrawing foreign aid. In 59% of these cases, the side that received assistance came to power, although Levin estimates the average effect of “partisan electoral interventions” to be only about a 3% increase in vote share. The U.S. hasn’t been the only one trying to interfere in other countries’ elections, according to Levin’s data. Russia attempted to sway 36 foreign elections from the end of World War II to the turn of the century – meaning that, in total, at least one of the two great powers of the 20th century intervened in about 1 of every 9 competitive, national-level executive elections in that time period. Italy’s 1948 general election is an early example of a race where U.S. actions probably influenced the outcome. “We threw everything, including the kitchen sink” at helping the Christian Democrats beat the Communists in Italy, said Levin, including covertly delivering “bags of money” to cover campaign expenses, sending experts to help run the campaign, subsidizing “pork” projects like land reclamation, and threatening publicly to end U.S. aid to Italy if the Communists were elected. Levin said that U.S. intervention probably played an important role in preventing a Communist Party victory, not just in 1948, but in seven subsequent Italian elections. Throughout the Cold War, U.S. involvement in foreign elections was mainly motivated by the goal of containing communism, said Thomas Carothers, a foreign policy expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “The U.S. didn’t want to see left-wing governments elected, and so it did engage fairly often in trying to influence elections in other countries,” Carothers said. This approach carried over into the immediate post-Soviet period. In the 1990 Nicaragua elections, the CIA leaked damaging information on alleged corruption by the Marxist Sandinistas to German newspapers, according to Levin. The opposition used those reports against the Sandinista candidate, Daniel Ortega. He lost to opposition candidate Violeta Chamorro. In Czechoslovakia that same year, the U.S. provided training and campaign funding to Vaclav Havel’s party and its Slovak affiliate as they planned for the country’s first democratic election after its transition away from communism. “The thinking was that we wanted to make sure communism was dead and buried,” said Levin. Even after that, the U.S. continued trying to influence elections in its favor. In Haiti after the 1986 overthrow of dictator and U.S. ally Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier, the CIA sought to support particular candidates and undermine Jean-Bertrande Aristide, a Roman Catholic priest and proponent of liberation theology. The New York Times reported in the 1990s that the CIA had on its payroll members of the military junta that would ultimately unseat Aristide after he was democratically elected in a landslide over Marc Bazin, a former World Bank official and finance minister favored by the U.S. The U.S. also attempted to sway Russian elections. In 1996, with the presidency of Boris Yeltsin and the Russian economy flailing, President Clinton endorsed a $10.2-billion loan from the International Monetary Fund linked to privatization, trade liberalization and other measures that would move Russia toward a capitalist economy. Yeltsin used the loan to bolster his popular support, telling voters that only he had the reformist credentials to secure such loans, according to media reports at the time. He used the money, in part, for social spending before the election, including payment of back wages and pensions. In the Middle East, the U.S. has aimed to bolster candidates who could further the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. In 1996, seeking to fulfill the legacy of assassinated Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and the peace accords the U.S. brokered, Clinton openly supported Shimon Peres, convening a peace summit in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el Sheik to boost his popular support and inviting him to a meeting at the White House a month before the election. “We were persuaded that if [Likud candidate Benjamin] Netanyahu were elected, the peace process would be closed for the season,” said Aaron David Miller, who worked at the State Department at the time. In 1999, in a more subtle effort to sway the election, top Clinton strategists, including James Carville, were sent to advise Labor candidate Ehud Barak in the election against Netanyahu. In Yugoslavia, the U.S. and NATO had long sought to cut off Serbian nationalist and Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic from the international system through economic sanctions and military action. In 2000, the U.S. spent millions of dollars in aid for political parties, campaign costs and independent media. Funding and broadcast equipment provided to the media arms of the opposition were a decisive factor in electing opposition candidate Vojislav Kostunica as Yugoslav president, according to Levin. “If it wouldn’t have been for overt intervention … Milosevic would have been very likely to have won another term,” he said.

What is noteworthy about this interview is that Brazile seems to confirm that all the emails were authentic. Her privacy was violated. How could it have been violated unless real emails were publicized by Wikileaks? As The Hill reports, Donna Brazile is calling on Congress to conduct a bipartisan investigation into Russia’s meddling in the U.S. election. “As Chair of the Democratic National Committee — one of the main victims of the Russian attacks — I ask that you support and provide any needed assistance to an independent, bipartisan investigation of the attacks that includes public hearings,” the interim chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee wrote in a letter to Congress Sunday. “What we do know is that these intrusions were not just ‘hacks’ — they were attacks on the United States by a foreign power, and they must be treated as such,” she said. Brazile wants answers to questions regarding Russia’s intent and how the U.S. is preparing to prevent future attacks. She called for the investigation to be “thorough, independent, and bipartisan.” How exactly is anything that Russia allegedly did worse than what we have learned the NSA has been doing all over the world? The Hill published their brief story without mentioning that Donna Brazile herself got fired by CNN for what the emails revealed about her cheating. Twice, from what we can tell in the leaked emails, Brazile gave the Clinton campaign advance notice about questions that Hillary would be asked in interviews. But in both the story and in the interview above she acted like what happened was all Russia’s fault. The interviewer in the video above asks if Brazile bears any responsibility for that “hack.” In the context, it sounds like a question about cybersecurity. But if we keep in mind the Brazile-CNN scandal, the question is easily interpreted in a different way. By cheating to help Hillary Clinton, Donna Brazile was a source of corruption that could be exposed to make the Clinton campaign look bad. The looked bad because the emails showed that they are bad. What made the Democrat party look even worse is that Donna Brazile acted like a self-righteous hypocrite after she was exposed. The Democrat Party, including President Obama, praised Brazile as if she was a hero for what she did. Now, with her blaming the Russians for her troubles, she is doubling down on her self-righteous act. But the Russians didn’t make her pass on CNN interview questions to Hillary Clinton. The Russians didn’t make the White House openly praise her after she was exposed as a cheater. The Democrats openly did all they could to condone Brazile’s behavior by praising her after she was caught. They basically increased the PR damage done by the leaked emails by how they acted in public. Even if Russia did indeed get the emails and pass them on to Wikileaks, Donna Brazile should look for reasons closer to home that led to Democrat defeat. She briefly dismissed the controversy about emails showing her sending a town hall question to the Clinton campaign––saying it was all just “allegations from stolen hacked emails” (allegations that led to CNN formally severing ties with her)––and said the emails were “weaponized to sew misinformation and to sew discord between the Clinton and Sanders camps.”Democratic National Committee (DNC) interim chairwoman Donna Brazile said on Sunday the DNC was not a match for Russhan cyber attacks throughout the presidential campaign. “We were fighting foreign adversary in the cyber space. Back in 2012, you may remember, Obama sat down with David Letterman in one of her endless, popularity-enhancing pop culture appearances. She bragged about her ability to shop incognito at Target (does she get a secret commission every time she mentions the store?) and told a warm and fuzzy story about helping a fellow customer who didn't recognize her. The shopper innocently asked Obama to retrieve laundry detergent from a high shelf. "I reached up, 'cause she was short, and I reached up, pulled it down," the first lady recounted, and the shopper joked, "Well, you didn't have to make it look so easy." Obama beamed as she told Letterman: "I felt so good" doing an everyday good deed. Letterman's audience cheered at the "first ladies, they're just like us!" theater. Just a few years later, however, the encounter morphed into a tall tale of rampant racism, which she cunningly reshaped for People Magazine in 2014 during the aftermath of the Ferguson, Missouri riots and Black Lives Matter protests. "Even as the first lady," she moaned, "not highly disguised, the only person who came up to me" at a Target store "was a woman who asked me to help her take something off a shelf." The headline of the article? "The Obamas: How We Deal With Our Own Racist Experiences." ABC News added that Michelle Obama claimed such "incidents are 'the regular course of life' for African Americans and a 'challenge' for the country to overcome." Last year, Obama persisted in plying and fine-tuning her false narrative at Tuskegee University's commencement ceremony — decrying the "sting" of "daily slights" she blamed on racism, including unnamed "clerks who kept a close eye on us in all those department stores." Now, as she walks away with sky-high poll ratings, a glittering Rolodex, and government benefits for life, this incredibly blessed and privileged woman has the audacity to claim that "we" are "feeling what not having hope feels like," as she whined to her well-heeled gal pal, Oprah Winfrey. So put upon. So downtrodden. So oppressed. To borrow one of Mrs. Woe-Is-Me's own favorite phrases: Bye, Felicia! You and your manufactured miseries won't be missed.

He’s back with another long boring piece for the liberal magazine about how racist America has been to Obama during his time in office. As part of this snore-fest, Obama makes the stunning claim that his terrible presidency only seems terrible because of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, and Sarah Palin. As you can see the failure of ObamaCare, the weak foreign policy decisions, the partisanship, and divisiveness are just an illusion created by that miniscule slice of the media that leans to the right. When you saw Obama golfing as the country and the world were burning, it just wasn’t true; Rush Limbaugh made it up. When Obama focused on unimportant social issues instead of the economy, it was an invention of Fox News. When Obama was waging a cultural war against most of America, it was really Sarah Palin who was dividing the nation. What a complete load of shit. No president in US history has received less scrutiny from the press than Obama. Most news outlets and the entire entertainment industry have been firmly in Obama’s corner from day one. Any time someone dared question him, a quick accusation of racism shot down that criticism. Obama carefully controlled his public persona and media coverage of his presidency. Kim Jong Il doesn’t get as favorable press from the North Korean media as Obama gets from the American media. The most ridiculous thing about this pathetic complaint is, all of the stuff that people hate about Obama, he’s actually proud of. Seriously, the socialism, the directionless policies, and the identity politics are what he considers his legacy. If he’s going to toot his own horn of his terrible presidency, he should be thanking Fox, Rush, and Sarah for calling attention to it.

Untangling the mess that is de Blasio’s scandal-ridden administration By Seth Barron December 17, 2016 \| 12:20pm News broke last week that the multiple grand juries investigating Mayor de Blasio’s crooked campaigns and shady financing schemes are getting close to voting on indictments. To which many New Yorkers asked, “What took so long?” In just three years, the mayor has managed to generate more serious scandals than both his predecessors did in the span of two decades, and it’s hard to stay on top of which prosecutor is looking into which violation. So here’s a quick refresher course on the current federal investigation, for those who’ve lost track of the overlapping cast of characters and conspiracies that have turned City Hall into a cistern of corruption and graft. Upon taking office, instead of dismantling his formidable campaign operation or putting it on the back burner as elected officials normally do, the mayor converted it into a nonprofit political fundraising organization on steroids. Called the Campaign for One New York, this entity was ostensibly charged with promoting the mayor’s progressive agenda — eliminating income inequality, gentrification, police brutality, traffic accidents, lack of ID cards, depression, etc. De Blasio consultant reportedly used City Hall to promote clients Managed by his campaign finance director Ross Offinger, CONY was supposedly a stand-alone, nonpartisan issues-advocacy outfit. But strip away all the fancy words and highfalutin ideas, and it becomes clear what CONY really was: a funnel for New York City’s donor class to pour millions of dollars into Team de Blasio’s open pockets. Virtually all of the money that went into the Campaign for One New York came from Big Labor, developers who needed city approval for their projects or rich advocates like horse-crazy Wendy Neu and Stephen Nislick, who wanted the mayor to make good on his promise to get rid of the Central Park carriages. And almost all the money that flowed out of the Campaign for One New York — millions of dollars — went to consulting firms such as BerlinRosen, Hilltop Public Solutions and AKPD Message and Media. These powerful consultancies are run by the men whom the mayor notoriously designated “agents of the city,” retroactively shielding their communications with his office from public scrutiny. The next few weeks are likely to result in indictments for senior mayoral staff, and perhaps the mayor himself. These agents of the city effectively turned City Hall into a teller’s cage, where clients could pay tribute and get their tickets punched. De Blasio has insisted, and continues to insist, that CONY was a necessary counterweight to the power of “landlords, a major multinational corporation, hedge-fund managers,” who were spending millions to destroy his progressive vision. “And what was the cause we were fighting for?” asked de Blasio back in July. “First it was pre-K, then it was affordable housing. Now, you know there’s a whole lot of money in politics in this country that goes to back up the interest of big business and the wealthy and the powerful. We were trying to help children and people who needed affordable housing.” Sounds noble — a good fight well fought. Except there was no significant opposition from those well-heeled quarters to either universal pre-kindergarten (UPK) or to the mayor’s affordable-housing plan. De Blasio continues to distort history on this topic. Friday, on his weekly WNYC radio interview with Brian Lehrer, he doubled down on his lies, insisting that “hedge-fund donors” sponsored a huge rally in Albany in March 2014 to oppose his plan to fund UPK with a tax on the very rich. In fact, that rally was actually in defense of charter schools, which the mayor had declared war upon. De Blasio to face fine for violating campaign-finance rules The latest news of the grand-jury investigation into CONY came just a day after the City Council passed a new law that limits the ability of nonprofits run by elected officials to solicit money from people doing business with the city. Yet the loopholes in this new law, which the council hailed as “a model for the nation,” are so specifically delineated that it almost reads like a manual for skirting the rules. The law so carefully targets the unique model of de Blasio’s Campaign for One New York, which went out of existence earlier this year, that it’s hard to imagine that it would have much future relevance to anything else. It is like shutting the barn door when the horse is dead. The mayor grudgingly says he’ll sign the bill into law, though he predictably grouses, “Anyone who wants to attack a mayor or the City Council or anything with endless amounts of money, there is now no counterbalance in the equation.” This is the response we have come to expect from de Blasio whenever things don’t go his way: snappish, self-pitying contempt. The next few weeks are likely to result in indictments for senior mayoral staff, and perhaps the mayor himself. It will be a blessing for New Yorkers finally to have some resolution of the spiraling, careening disaster of corruption that calls itself our city government.

"All I Want for Christmas is White Genocide," associate professor of politics and global studies George Ciccariello-Maher wrote on Christmas Eve. He then wrote on Sunday: "To clarify: when the whites were massacred during the Haitian revolution, that was a good thing indeed." Not long thereafter, Ciccariello-Maher's tweets were picked up by the Daily Caller, Breitbart and other conservative news sites. His tweets are not public, or at least weren't as of Monday morning. It is public, though, that he has over 10,000 followers and has tweeted over 16,000 times. Ciccariello-Maher teaches in Drexel's Department of History and Politics. His bio on Drexel's website says he is "an expert and frequent media commentator on social movements, particularly in Latin America" who also "teaches, researches and writes about race, racism, prisons and policing in the U.S. and internationally, including how race is associated with suspicion and guilt." His name has appeared a few times in the Inquirer and Daily News, most recently in a story last year on how Philadelphia police handled protests in the city. Reached on Monday by The Inquirer, Ciccarierllo-Maher offered a reaction to the reaction. "On Christmas Eve, I sent a satirical tweet about an imaginary concept, 'white genocide,'" he said in an e-mail. 'For those who haven't bothered to do their research, 'white genocide' is an idea invented by white supremacists and used to denounce everything from interracial relationships to multicultural policies (and most recently, against a tweet by State Farm Insurance). It is a figment of the racist imagination, it should be mocked, and I'm glad to have mocked it." Many readers and social media followers didn't get the humor, though - and his employer didn't either. On Sunday night, Drexel issued an official statement saying: "While the University recognizes the right of its faculty to freely express their thoughts and opinions in public debate, Professor Ciccariello-Maher's comments are utterly reprehensible, deeply disturbing, and do not in any way reflect the values of the University." The university also said it "contacted Ciccariello-Maher today to arrange a meeting to discuss this matter in detail." Ciccariello-Maher said Drexel's statemenet lacked "understanding either the content or the context of the tweets," and that "while Drexel has been nothing but supportive in the past, this statement is worrying." "What is most unfortunate is that this statement amounts to caving to the truly reprehensible movements and organizations that I was critiquing," he said. "On the university level, moreover, this statement - despite a tepid defense of free speech -sends a chilling message and sets a frightening precedent. It exposes untenured and temporary faculty not only to internal disciplinary scrutiny, but equally importantly, it encourages harassment as an effective means to impact university policies." He added that he has been the subject of "a coordinated smear campaign [that] was orchestrated to send mass tweets and emails to myself, my employer, and my colleagues," and that he has "received hundreds of death threats." "This satirical tweet became fodder for online white supremacists to systematically harass me and my employer, Drexel University," Ciccariello-Maher said. "As my students will attest, my classroom is a free-for-all of ideas, in which anyone is welcome to their opinions, but expected to defend those opinions with argument.
