The infamous "??????? ???????????" model of 1947. If you listen to Mikhail Kalashnikov, he claims the entire design was totally new.
I call bullshit.
If any of you are familiar with the StG 44, appearance, weight, gas system and calibre you might suspect as I do that Kalashnikov's claim is false.
Any opinions here?

Like the Turkish architecture of the Kremlin that "wasn't" stolen from Turkey?
Ok, one vote in favor of the copy.

You ever see the curved barrel the Germans made for suppressive fire around corners? F**kin' crazy! Only lasted like 150-200 rounds or something like that. Too much stress on it.

I have seen that....apparently Germans were under great risk in countries like Norway and weren't permitted to to travel in small numbers. Many Germans were losing their lives by simply poking their head around a corner to see what was there.
Can you imagine the heat and pressure on that weapon?!?!
I heard it was pretty damn inaccurate despite the mirrored sighting system that would allow the shooter to take aim from cover but I thought the barrel would last a little longer than that....don't quote me but I think it was closer to 1500-2000 rounds which is still an incredibly low life expectancy.

The Russians were quite impressed with the bolt system of the M-1 Garand and after pressing Hugo Schmeisser into service to build weapons for the USSR I think it's a fair guess that the bolt of the AK resembles that of the Garand while the rest of the weapon suggests a close replica of the StG 44.
It is interesting to note that the original AK was supposed to utilize stamping, a relatively new type of construction the Germans mastered but it was a capability beyond Russian engineers. The earliest AK receivers where milled from a 4 lb block of steel. It wasn't until the late 50's and early 60's that the AK was retired and was replaced by the AKM which used sheet metal stamping.
Their inability to copy 1940's technology doesn't do well in supporting Kalashnikov's claim that the AK was a completely new design.

I knew the thing didn't hold up. Been a while since I saw it on tv.
