WINDHAM — It was a night of firsts and a time for Windham High School to celebrate the challenges it has overcome at the Class of 2015 commencement ceremony Friday.
The 118 students are the school’s 141st graduating class, but the first graduates of the STEM and Arts and Humanities academies there.
It was also the first high school graduation celebration in the district for Superintendent Patricia Garcia.
“You have to become productive members of society now,” Garcia said. “You have the power to change the world.”
Salutatorian Shelby Green said that, from the start of their time at Windham High School, the seniors have had to battle the outside world’s perception of them.
“Everybody loves to hate us at [Windham High],” Green said. “Never be afraid to be the underdog like you have for the last four years. Being the underdog is not so bad and proving everyone wrong is pretty fun.”
Valedictorian Lindsey Phaneuf said the lessons learned in four years at Windham High would serve the students well in finding their passions and understanding how to navigate the world ahead of them.
The Class of 2015 entered high school the same year the state appointed a special master to oversee the district. They entered a comprehensive high school without a uniform policy, and, in their sophomore year, were divided into the academies.
Principal Dorothy Potter said the seniors were part of the new experiment at the high school and they needed to learn and grow and accept change as they went.
It was the Class of 2015 that took on the administration and forced the quick evolution of the academies, Potter said.
The academies started as a rigid separation, and the seniors were the ones who demanded the academies not take away the importance of being one school, she said.
“La Familia,” Potter said. “It’s one of the most important themes of our school and you reminded us all of that. You leave a legacy behind you.”
Board of Education Chairman Tracy Lambert celebrated the class, which includes her daughter, Gabrielle.
Lambert said the class weathered many storms together, including Hurricane Irene, which hit the day before their freshman orientation.
“I hope your time at Windham High has been everything you hoped it would be and your future shines as bright as your eyes,” Lambert said through tears.
Guest speaker Michael Vertefeuille, Class of ’88, and the associate department head of digital media and design at the University of Connecticut, gave the commencement address and shared with the seniors that, while he was a Whippet, he had his fair share of detentions and was not the best student.
Hard work and perseverance helped him find his path through adversity, Vertefeuille said, echoing the sentiment of other speakers.
“You have to make the life you want,” Vertefeuille said. “No one will hand it to you. You have to work for it.”
