What are you considering an 'extreme' workout?

If you're training for a marathon you need to also replenish energy during the run. Gel shots or shot bloks are great for that.

Also you should have drank lots of water during the day to prepare for the session. Also recommend something before. Like half a banana and a Clif bar or something.

When you're finished, another gel shot of energy is a good start. I prefer a lighter protein shake - it's easier to stomach afterwards. It helps begin rebuilding muscles.

If you consider an 'extreme' workout 20-30 minutes in the gym, you really don't need anything besides plenty of fluids and a balanced diet.

Best thing you can do to recover is get sufficient nightly sleep. Slight sleep deprivation hampers optimal recovery.

Why do you think you need supplements?

A properly balanced granola bar and a shot of espresso is good. Part of a banana is good.

If you aren't giving your body proper nutrition around the clock, no amount of working out is going to be optimized. And you will never recover no matter how many supplements you take

Nature's energy(fruit) is good before a workout. If that feels too heavy, then you can drink fruit juice before and during.

I used to have to do Army PT tests. What is the Marines requirement to pass?

You probably mean 29.00 3 mile.

Like I mentioned previously, besides pushing yourself in those events a few times a week, lose as much fat as possible to improve your strength-to-weight ratio for a pullup number much higher than 3 and for a 3 mile time much lower than 29 mins. Crunches will be easy to improve on.

You're still 27 years old and used to be in excellent shape. Unless you have been immobile for 7 years you can walk/run and still hit 10 minute mile times.
