I am now forced to go to Comcast. I don't do games or download video. (Although I might decide to download a movie sometime in the future.

I am on a budget and I would like to get a fair price from Comcast.

Should I buy my own Modem? Is it difficult to install? Which modem is allowed by Comcast?

Are some better than others? (How so?)

Any advise would be appreciated.

Michael

I don't know if this will help?

My internet is DSL thru Frontier, my phone company, they bought out Verizon land lines in this area. I use the one they provided for around 6 bucks a month, if there is a problem with it or an upgrade? They replace it for free, I was having some connection problems last month and called them, they were out in a day or two and replaced the modem which cleared up the issue. They gave me a new style modem because they did issue my original one anymore.

Cable? DOCSIS standards are increasing every couple of years so you might not get the best speeds if your modem is not up to snuff. But, people are still using DOCSIS2.0 modems so there is that.

Since they can cost about $65 to $100 to buy one, it kind of does not make sense to buy one, unless you think your going to keep the service for more than two years.

However do buy a decent Router, that is more important as the last thing you want is your PC on a Public IP address.

Do like I did and buy the zoom modem when it's on a good deal. You'll probably get it for less than 1 year's worth of Comcast fees. The only negative is it has an annoying smell for a while in the beginning.

Why buy a modem? The Motorola is nice. You can even hack the settings if you want to get better speeds.
