It's official! After spending a year in Tennessee, I am excited to get back to my home in SW Florida. I have no regrets for moving a year ago, but my heart belongs in Fort Myers. With any luck I'll be back home on the 30th of this month.

Great news, Jim.
Also great news about your health. You've had a hell of a year.

I've never been, but I'm prone to thinking it would be similar to Melbourne, etc. Is that the case?

Welcome home! I have many times thought about relocating, just for a change in location, but as a transplant I realize I belong in Florida. u

No, not at all like Melbourne. Melbourne is on the Atlantic side of the state and about 150 miles north of Fort Myers. So the average temperatures are colder in the winter months for starters. Fort Myers is much more tropical. The population of Melbourne is 76,000 while Fort Myers is 68,000. When I moved to Fort Myers in 1963 at the age of 12, the population was around 26,000. For several years in a row, Fort Myers/ Cape Coral area was the fastest growing place in the USA.
Across the river the city of Cape Coral was just beginning the grow with a population of only 2,800 people. Now is a giant at 168,000 people. The city is known as a "Waterfront Wonderland", since with over 400 mi of navigable waterways, Cape Coral has more miles of canals than any other city in the world. The reason for the canals was because most of Cape Coral was a swamp and under water. The remained was low land cattle country. The canals were all dug with 3 dredges to fill the swamp so roads and homes homes could be built. Right out of High school, I worked on one of those dredges for several months. A book was written about the early days of Cape Coral. The title is "CAPE CORAL,THE LIES THAT BECAME TRUE" ( Amazon )http://www.amazon.com/Lies-That-Came-True-Creation/dp/B003BO8FUY
Fort Myers was the winter home of Thomas Alva Edison. He said, "there is only one Fort Myers and 80 million people are going to find that out." Henry Ford was his neighbor.
In 1954 Elvis Presley, before he was known, performed as a warm and intermission act at the old Exhibition Center.
Yeah I know, more than you asked for. LOL
