I like (not much) how God goes "stone him with stones", as if the Israelites might have selected an alternative form of projectile without this handy piece of divine advice. 
Now while the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day. A stone is a very particular type of rock though, often described as a rock that has been eroded by water, wind, and chemicals over time. So, without God guiding them, they could have stoned him with graphite or something. Wouldn't that be terrible?
