It tells me, that they are afraid of losing reputation of their party, which also reduces their chances of maintaining the control of Congress.
While not all voters will simply vote, because of party affiliation, some vote for their party regardless of who is running.
This is why Bernie Sanders chose the Democratic party, DESPITE being a true independent representative.
Trump could cost other US congressmen, the votes they should ultimately get, and the GOP is seeing his behavior as costly to the party.
"Guilt by association" is the philosophy behind this decision.
Kinda the way some females refuse to align themselves with Feminism, because the Third-Wave Feminists are proactively working for Female superiority.
It is not that these females are truly in support of fair treatment for men, they just don't want to be alone, so they use it as a marketing ploy to trap a man with the belief that she will treat him differently than other men, until he actually commits to her and she later takes everything he owns, and his family with a divorce filing because he went broke.

Now, we both know that you are fairly accurate in your statements about how the Capitalist Elite(which were only able to be ELITE because of Capitalism, ironically)having control over the government. So, IF Donald pulls the majority of popular vote, BUT fails to win the election, the majority of American public will KNOW beyond a reasonable doubt that the system is rigged(further reinforcing support of Trump having already stated this).
Which I am sure the Democrats have already formed a back door contingency plan for handling the retaliation of the American public, IF that were to happen.
Some people will react with the "go along to get along". Other, however could form an all out revolt due to the increased levels of emotional resentment for their government being corrupt.
Nobody can accurately predict what WILL happen, but the possibility of seeing a second civil war is definitely NOT unrealistic. The American working class is pissed off at the way things are going, and there is a reason you don't toy with pissed off people: You do NOT know how they will react when they finally let that contempt, anger, and resentment loose.
Science calls it "Fight or Flight".
I call it: Fight, F**k, or Hit the Fence
The explanation is easy, and rhetorical to qeustion.

We all know that Trump is a scumbag. The only reason he is running neck and neck with Hitlery in spite of the massive pro-Hitlery, anti-Trump, ruling-class propaganda, is that we all know Hitlery is even worse scum. She is the preferred representative of the widely-hated, raping, looting, warmongering, murderous, torture-loving, U.S. ruling-class. The fact that those scumbags love her and desperately want her to be president is reason to vote for anyone else.
There may be a little bit of truth to this.
Hillary represents the status quo, and Trump the unknown. Trump isn't really a member of any political party and obviously no politician.
Trump is a brash aggressive bold bare knuckles kind of guy. He is the most unique candidate to run for political office in American history. What fascinating is Trump decided to skip the traditional route to the highest political office or not serving a political apprenticeship in minor roles before running for the highest office.
If you had spent some time reading his two books, Art of the Deal and Art of the Comeback, you might understand this guy. Even the early years of his life before adulthood are fascinating.
Why was he able to beat back all the other candidates in the race for president? It's because the Republican Party doesn't have any viable candidates for the office. What they have are a bunch of washed up losers who have no ideas about what the American public wants and needs. They espoused an ideology of conservatism which has no practical application in contemporary American life.
Donald and Hillary are both very flawed candidates. If the best the Republican Party could offer was Donald, you might ask why the Democrats couldn't do better than Hillary? The answer is the political institutions in America are thoroughly corrupt only serving the interests of the rich, Wall Street, lobbyists, banks, and crackpot political ideologists.
Trump is an unknown, and their isn't any leadership in either political party. That's pretty clear looking back a couple of decades or more. Trump being an unknown is the best shot America has given what we know about all the other scumbags.
