In the last 9-10 months we've had 2 locations of the German store chain Aldi open up here. I know it's in multiple places around the country...have you been to one and do you like them?
We have about 3 or 4 more planned to open in the next 6-8 months...and another chain is coming to the US, 3 locations confirmed here...
Lidl
It's more like a Walmart with the stuff they have (groceries but also clothing and furniture plus a few other things, but smaller).
If you have a quirky store in your area, let us know about it, we may have one of the same in our area.

We've had Aldi's here for years and years.
pretty low prices, but funky brands, you pay to use the grocery carts, and they charge you for every bag.
Ive never shopped there.
They've now progressed to organic stores, which is a joke...being that trend is just an arm and a leg.
If you want great food at competitive prices,Gordon's food service is the way to go.

Nope, dont like them, I never have a quarter to get a cart also I am not fond of having to bag my own groceries, however, they are on every corner and they are tiny, so, if its one or two items you need to get on the way home from work, then this is the store for you.

There is an Aldi in Athens that has been around for a few years. Still haven't been. A woman I met on Ga Chat and dated for a couple of years had one in her town and she loved it.

I do like going to Fresh Market once in awhile. Sort of a boutique grocery store. Good cheese and deli and interesting soft drinks. Don't know how national a chain it is. Athens has had a a Trader Joes for 5-6 years now. Decent selection of semi-upscale type stuff at decent prices. I'm sort of a lazy grocery shopper in that if it's not one of two big chain stores or the Podunk hole-in-the-wall one that are on my 22 mile drive home, I generally don't bother with it. I'm pretty beat and don't make the effort to go someplace in Athens during rush hour.

The original Aldi company was split in half by the founder, because he intended his 2 sons to run the business and didn't want them fighting over control. Aldi Nord (North) is the parent company of Trader Joe's. Aldi Sud (South) is the company that has Aldi stores.
We have all three big "natural" stores here (Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, The Fresh Market). I like The Fresh Market better because they are closer and more reasonable on things. And their Ancient Grains Cranberry Bread beats them all.

Never heard of Aldi but I just bought some Pumpkin Soup at Trader Joe's and they have a great Seafood Blend mix that I put over pasta.

Do y'all have Save-A-Lot? Someone compared Aldi to Save-A-Lot and Trader Joe's having a baby.

Had Aldi's here for years. They are great for some staples such as milk, flour, etc. Also they have their own brands. Some blow, but some are great like their dry cereals and oatmeal.
Also Save-a-Lot invaded the state some 15 years or so ago. I want to say they're an offshoot of the notorious Giant Eagle stores. They, too, are good for some staples and both do actually carry some name brands. Both also have some decent produce and frozen items.
I would advise not buying "fresh" meat at either one. Not great in their quality. Also, like Bobbie said, take a quarter with you to Aldi's to "rent" the shopping cart, and also make sure you bring your own bags, as they charge you for their bags. And lastly, make sure to put aside an extra five to ten minutes for shopping cause you do bag your own groceries.

I wasn't targeting anyone in particular.
Aldi's pretty much sells all the crap that no one wants in the more mainsteam stores.

I actually like Aldis .. I pay a quarter for the cart but get it back when I return it. I use boxes from around the store so I don't have to buy bags. I shop it knowing that these minor inconveniences are why they sell gallon milk for a dollar or more below local market price, dozen eggs are less than 75 cents, loaf of wheat bread is under a dollar ... lots of good pricing on staple items.
Granted, I can't get all my groceries there, but I can get a lot of what I need.

Uber, it's worth a look in your free time. The Aldi's here is on my way home from work so it isn't off the beaten path. We stopped in, my kids and I, to check it out. And we've gone back ever since for staple food ingredients.
But don't go looking for fresh meats and a variety of vegetables/fruit. That's better left to the supermarkets
